Title: Oiling Asian Hair
Post by TigerLily on Mar 17th, 2006 at 3:40pm
So after reading everyone's amazing hair tips - I still can't get over how knowledgeable everyone is about hair here :o - I decided to get over my laziness and use that bottle of L'occitane Olive Oil for Hair that I have.

I used a teensy amount on the hair ends while my hair was still wet, and yet when it dried, it was all heavy and sticky and not exactly bouncy and beautiful.

:-/

Did I use too much? How much do you use?

Thanks in advance, O hair gurus!

Hey, TigerLily  :)

While I totally don't have Asian hair (unfortunately), I can tell you that olive oil (especially the extra virgin type) is one of the heavier oils out there. I have found it to be much too heavy for my fine hair, even when heavily diluted with water. Not to mention the smell of it reminds me of many oil-based paints that I have used.  :P

The type and quantity of oil used depends on the thickness and porousness of your hair. Everybody's different, so oiling is one of those things best tested by trial and error.

From what I have read, most people here use just 1 or 2 drops of oil in the palm of the hand, rub both palms together, then smooth over the length of the hair.

However, I personally lightly spray the very tips of my hair with a mixture of baby oil and water...and that seems to work well.

So, like I said, trial and error. You may try diluting your oil solution, using less of it or just using something else altogether. Sorry if I'm no help whatsoever...it's kind of a personal quest.  ;)

Hi Tigerlily :)

I don't have asian hair either :'(, but many ppl have found olive oil very heavy as a leave in. Many prefer (myself included) a few drops of jojoba oil, which is much lighter.

HTH :)

Yep, as the others said - olive oil is a heavier oil than many of us find to be too heavy for our fine hair.

Depending on just how much you used, you might try it again, with just a drop of oil rubbed between you hands, then apply to the ends.

I use jojoba oil - 2 drops is plenty for my classic length hair.

Aw wow, thanks for the tips! I'm definitely going to try and get my hands on some jojoba oil. Or baby oil. Fab suggestions :-*

I don't recommend baby oil, it's mineral oil which is from petroleum.  The other oils are derived from plants -- different chemistry -- and are better suited to moisturize hair.

I have Asian hair... oils are a tricky thing to use on Asian hair types, for some reason. The result is usually "crunchy" or "plastic". I personally haven't found a favorite oil to use, and oftentimes I forgo the use of oils completely (unless it's really windy, or if I'm using shea butter as a braiding or bunning creme)

Basically, it's okay if your hair doesn't like oils, and it's okay not to use oils. You can make it up to your hair for it with other nice things.

A little goes a long way though! 1-2 drops is a good amount.
