Title: After the big cut: How often/much do you trim? Post by Christiana on Nov 27th, 2005 at 12:17am
I finally trimmed my hair for the first time in 5 years--maybe longer, I can't even remember!!! I call it a "big" cut but it was really just a few inches, mostly thin, wispy ends. Now I have healthy-looking-and-feeling waist length hair, and I want to keep it that way!
I have fine, thin hair that damages and turns to "straw ends" quickly--like in a month. So I was thinking that if I do a micro-trim once a month, that should keep it looking its best. What do you all do? How much do you trim, and how often? Just curious. Thanks to inspiration from LongLocks (and a glass of wine on Thanksgiving eve ;) ) I got the courage to make the much-needed cut! And I am soooooooo happy!!! :) :) :) |

Hey Christiana :)
As far as trims go, I schedule them no less often than every 3 months. Of course, to maximize growth, I usually try to see how far I can stretch the time between trims. I believe my last one was in August, and my next is scheduled for December, for a total of 4 months in between. I have no more than 1/2 an inch taken off each time. Do you oil your hair at all? I find that oiling just the very ends of mine keeps them from drying out between trims. I have very fine hair also. |

Congrats on the trim! It sounds like your hair is doing well because of it. :)

;D ;DCongratulations on your successful cut and waist-length hair! 8) 8)
(can't give any advice on the micro-trims, I'm still trying to get mine to BSL and so am not trimming/cutting very much) |

Congratulations for successful cut!
Last year, I trimmed twice, which seems to be too little for my fine hair. Next year, I'm planning to do smaller trims every 3 months, hoping that it will help me to keep nice ends and still get some growth. |

If you want to do micro-trims each month and still have growth, a few mm at most. I trim almost every month, but sometimes I forget and go a few months without it. Last month I was irritated with the ends and took off at least 1/4 inch.

Congrats on the big trim, Christiana! I just had a big trim a few months ago as well...I got 4" hacked off, and I actually haven't gotten a trim yet. I think I can wait another month yet, then I'll plan to have about a 1/4" cut off. I just tried my first "oiling" this morning, I put a few drops of jojoba oil in my hands, rubbed them together and smoothed over my hair just on the last few inches. I was worried that it would make my hair look oily, but it didn't, it made it feel more hydrated and shinier looking. So I think that would be a great idea to keep the ends of your hair from drying out so quickly ( as Angel Spun also mentioned :D ). And, also remember that hydration starts from the inside-out, so be sure to drink plenty of water, it's good for your hair, your skin, your whole body, it helps to keep all the toxins moving there way on out...bad toxins!

i had a really big cut in september... my hair was barely reaching my shoulders!! i hope u can imagine the shock and anxiety i faced... but then i was like okay... i can help soften the look by braiding and stuff... but i could barely make a pony... now my hair is around mid-riff and i plan not to trim it for atleast one year... like u did for 5 years.. :)
