Title: Kimberlily's leave-in spray
Post by kimberlily on Oct 26th, 2005 at 6:14pm
My hair really likes this...

1 tbsp jojoba oil
1 tbsp aloe juice (not the green gel, but the stuff at Whole Foods that you can drink... you can also use juice squeezed from the plant)
1/2 cup spring water
essential oils of your choice

Pour all ingredients into a spray bottle. Add essential oils for scent (though this mix has no odor to speak of, so the EO's aren't necessary if you don't want them). Shake well, and spritz on hair.

I use this after washing my hair as a detangler, as well as to freshen up my hair between washes. I also use it on my 3-year-old daughter's hair instead of storebought detangler. It keeps my hair from being frizzy, and takes some of the "poof" out too. It also defines my waves a bit, which is an added bonus!

Hmmmm, I don't think I've ever seen aloe juice - just the gel.  I may need to go hunting for this.

You can get the juice at Whole Foods or other natural food stores. It is actually called aloe gel, and I buy the Lily of the Desert brand. It is about $3 for 400ml. The one I get is 99% pure, and has almost no additives. It needs refrigeration after you open it.

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks.  I'll see if I can find it this weekend.  I've been trying to find something to help tame some of my halo/frizzies - this just might do the trick.  I've used the aloe gel for a stronger hold, but don't always need that much control.  A light spray is all I think I really need.

The whole reason I concocted this was to deal with frizzies and give my waves some definition. I didn't change anything else about my routine. I think the photos I posted probably show how well it is working for me :) I hope it works for you too!

Just a side note FYI....you can also find the drinkable aloe vera juice at Wal*Mart (ugh, ugh!).

Wow your hair looks awesome. I too have problem with frizzies, especially after washing my hair. I think I will try this and cross my fingers that it will work.

Give it a try... if you've already got jojoba and aloe on hand, you really have nothing to lose ;) It costs about $0.25 a bottle to make!

I have the jojoba oil, just need to go and buy the aloe vera juice.

The aloe juice will cost you between $3 and $4. You can also add it to your conditioner. Aloe is VERY moisturizing :)

Thanks Kimberlily  :)

I will give this a try. I like products with Aloe anyway.

I like the immediate results but I may have to adjust the ingredients some.  It seems to weigh my hair down too much  :-/

Really nice!  :)

I adjusted the levels to suit my hair a little better, and I made a smaller portion just for test.  I didn't measure anything out precisely so this is approximately what I used, 1/4 cup spring water, 1/8 cup aloe juice, 1 tsp jojoba oil.  I first washed with my all natural rosemary & sage shampoo bar, and then after I was out of the shower and had combed thru my hair I then sprayed in the mixture.  My hair felt very soft & looked very shiny and healthy, I am really pleased with it!

Thanks for posting that, Kimberlily!  ;D

...BTW, am I supposed to keep the mix refrigerated?

I'd recommend keeping it refrigerated since you have no preservatives in it and I'm not sure what the shelf life of the aloe oil would be.

I will refrigerate it then, hope it's not already spoiled!  I only made a small batch, so it wouldn't be much loss.  Thanks BB!

What about baby oil?  :-/

Title: Re: Kimberlily's leave-in spray

Baby oil's structure is different - the molecules are too large to be absorbed by the hair, so the oil would just sit on the outside of the hair.  This would leave the hair with a greasy look.

Actually, it depends on how much baby oil is diluted with other things. I have used a solution of water, baby oil & aloe gel on the ends of my hair for at least a year & it has worked out fine.

That said, the jojoba recommended is probably best. It has a much lighter texture and can be absorbed easier by the hair without having to dilute it too much. Baby oil by itself would probably be much to heavy for this recipe...you'd have to do some proportion tweaking.  ;)

Would just like to notate that I've been using this stuff every day for 4 months, and totally love it.  In fact, I attribute my new longer length to it, it's kept my ends hydrated and healthy, which meant that I could go longer between trims.  Before this I was using straight jojoba oil, which is fantasic just on it's own, but I like the mixture because it's a little bit lighter for my type of hair, and I also like the control of the spray bottle.

Just wanted to update and share that.  :)

Ok, I have to try this.  I am going to make it up tonight for tomorrow.  I even have my own aloe plant so I don't need to go buy anything...and man do those aloes grow!!!  I love what it did to Kimberlily's hair.  I am right on it!!

I LOVE this.  As someone mentioned before, I love having the control using the spray bottle.  I found jojoba oil makes my hair greasy since I don't seem to be able to figure how much is right for my hair.  It takes a while to squeeze the aloe out of my aloe plant, but I end up with nice soft hands after the effort as a bonus.  It is a lot cheaper than the store bought product I have been using (and still do love) and does just as good a job.  Thanx for this recipe!!

oo this sounds nice! I needa detangler pretty bad and my hair frizzes up a lot because of the weather where I'm at, I might try this!

By "defining" your waves, do you mean that it makes more of them?  My hair is arrow straight and I like it that way, Iv'e never put aloe in my hair so Im not sure what effects it has, but im curious it it is going to make my hair curl up at all, as my baby hairs that line my hair line tend to curl up in the humifity, i wonder if this would worsen it (becuase I hate it hehe).

might have to try!

has anyone with VERY straight hair tried this?

Hi Tara,

Welcome to LongLocks.

I tried this for a short while.  I found it made my hair too greasy to use.  Different hair types and all though.  It might do wonders for you.
