Title: Crocheted ponytail tube Post by bikerbraid on Oct 14th, 2005 at 12:15pm
I was bouncing around the net looking for a pattern and found this free crochet pattern for a ponytail tube. Sorta like a hairglove. I think I'll have to give this a try for my biking.

Hmm, so it buttons on?? It's very pretty! I may have to try my hand at making one of those.

I think that would slip right out of my hair, looks like it would work well for someone with course or curly hair, though. Very cute, different too!

Here's my "review" of the ponytail tube:
I went out at lunch and picked up some "Sugar 'n Cream" cotton yarn. I had the crochet hook in my bag, so I quickly started the pattern. Basically it is a simple single crochet rectangle. The instructions are not professionally written, and I had a bit of trouble with the popcorn buttons. I decided it would be too difficult to button the thing on behind my head, so I improvised. On the one side you make little loops (button holes), so I did the same thing on the other side. I then made two chains and laced them through the loops to be tied at the bottom of the tube. I made my tube to be about 8 inches long - enough to protect my hair at my neck. It stays amazingly well! :D If I were to wear it bicycling, I would put a scrunchie or elastic tie at the top to make sure it did not slide down. I think if I did another one, I would do some double crochets for a lacier effect on the laced side. The whole thing took me about an hour to make. I may just have to do another one, longer and with lacier stitches! |

Thanks for the link and the suggestions, BB.
Do you think it can be made with regular yarn? Or even crochet thread - you can probably get a lacier look with crochet thread. I'll have to put it on my "to-do" list. |

String might be too light weight, but regular yarn should work.

How does it feel as you wear it? Does it feel heavy or strange behind your head? Curious!

A popcorn stitch is similar to the bobble - except it is done with double crochets and pulled together before doing the sc in the next stitch. Here's a page that shows how to do a popcorn stitch. Wearing it was very comfortable. I think it would be a bit heavy if made much longer, but making it lacier should help eliminate some of the weight. |

BB Oh yeah, I know what you mean now! the little ones. I made a sweater using the big bubbles, it was from a Kaffe Fassett book :)

Wow, Lisabelle! You made that? It's very pretty, I admire you patience to do such a thing! My lack of patience has left me with several started projects...very few completed ones :-/
Very nice! :D |

Ooh thanks for sharing the links! That tube looks really cool. I can even imagine making really skinny ones, pulling your hair up in a high ponytail, and wearing a bunch of skinny ones. kind of a funky, spikey, kind of look.
Nice sweater, Lisabelle! Cynde |
