Title: Cleaning Scalp with Vinegar?
Post by Christiana on Sep 18th, 2005 at 7:55pm
I would appreciate your advice, please tell me I didn't do any damage to my hair! ::)  My 2nd day hair is always scalp-oily, and thinking that vinegar cuts grease, I made a vinegar/water solution in a spray bottle. (1/4 cup of each)  I parted my hair down the center and sprayed down the part, massaging it into my scalp.  Besides the most wonderful tingly feeling it gave me, my root hair felt softer and a bit less oily in the morning...(I think....)I will have to experiment some more.  But not being the scientific type, is this hazardous to my roots?  Will it dissolve more than oil if I keep this up?  I would like to go for 3 or more days without doing a total hairwash routine.  If you know something other than vinegar that might be effective, please let me know that too!

I apply vinegar to my scalp for every hairwash, and so far with this much exposure there are no ill effects. Like you, I massage it in really really well, but I do rinse it out. Some people have been known to do vinegar as a very last rinse. I treat it like a second step to the CO process

And it really helped bring down the grease when I was adjusting to life without shampoo. I don't know about using it as a leave-in though

I don't think this would harm your hair - I use a pretty strong mixture as a rinse between my shampoo and conditioner.  My mother used to do a vinegar rinse as a final rinse and not rinse it out.  (The smell goes away after the hair dries - but look out for rainy days - the smell does return when the hair gets wet!)

Good luck with your experimentation and let us know how it goes!

I've done a rinse with watered down apple cider vinegar before but are there other vinegars you can use?

You can probably use just about any vinegar.  Red wine for red or red highlight hair, white vinegar (in place of apple cider), etc.  I've used the white vinegar when I didn't have ACV and found no difference in effects.

Can you believe I STILL have not tried a vinegar rinse yet?  Tsk, tsk.

I have the same problem with an oily scalp on the 2nd hair day, thus I must wash every day.  To be gentler to my hair in doing this, what I've been doing is on the first day I do a complete hair wash & condition, then for the next 2-3 days I work a little shampoo just into my scalp and roots and rinse.  The diluted suds run through the length of my hair, and the I use a little conditioner just on the lower half of my hair.  Seems to be working out better that doing a complete washing every single day, my hair is softer and shinier than it was.

When doing a vinegar rinse, when during the wash is the best time to use, and how do you dilute it?

You might try diluting your shampoo as well.  This can help minimize over cleaning and help your scalp adjust to less frequent shampooing.

:::ANNOUNCEMENT:::

I did my first ACV rinse this morning!  I am very pleased with the results- me likes, me likes!  ;D

I shampooed, did the rinse, and then conditioned.  I was worried about carrying around a vinegar smell, but that's not the case at all, it completely rinsed away.  Yay!

It took me a while to work up the courage to do AVR for the first time but I have been doing it a year now with great results.
