Hey everyone :),
So my friend has this salt-water pool and whenever I come out of it my hair always has the most gorgeous defined waves :).  These are waves that I could never get using commercial styling products.  So I was wondering if anyone knew how bad for the hair this was.  And would it be awful for my hair if I experimented with a sea-salt sprays once in awhile?

Interesting.......  I've always tried to protect my hair from salt water.  I tried to look up info on it and everything I found regarding sea salt and hair was regarding sea salt hairspray and other styling aids that were intended to make the hair look "messed" and have a matte finish.

Maybe it is just getting too late for me and I've spent too many hours attending all the diamond parties, my brain and fingers are not working well anymore.  Anyone else have a suggestion?

Bardot, I've heard that you can mix up a couple of tablespoons of sea salt in a spray bottle with water and a squeeze of lemon juice.  Spritzed on it's supposed to give you that "just back from the beach" look.

I can't tell you if this is something you'd want to do every day, as salt can be pretty corrosive to metal, I can't imagine it would be all that great on hair.  I can't say for sure because I've never tried it myself.

Some web searching turned up some info that Dead Sea Salts can have a conditioning effect on hair.  There's is a pretty good list of Dead Sea Salt products at this site

It's a pretty long page, so you can hit Control-F to bring up your browser's search box, and type "shampoo" to find the occurances of "shampoo" on the page.

I think if you want to "salt" your hair daily, it's probably safe to use these daily (or whatever is recommended on the directions.)

I wonder if there is anywhere local I could buy dead sea salt?  Where is the Dead Sea anyway?  Can fish live in there?

As soon as I get some I'm gonna try that sea salt in the spray bottle thing.  I think that using it once in awhile wouldn't hurt.   I also think that sea salt is better than regular salt because it has more minerals or something.  Maybe thats why it has a conditioning effect.  And since they make a shampoos with the salt in them, I wonder if they make conditioners too.

This whole thing, also got me wondering about products with sea weed or sea kelp in them.  I think that Jason makes a sea kelp conditioner. . . but I gotta figure out this salt thing first  ;D.  (OMG-I had to modify this cuz I accidently wrote dead seal salt. Thats so horrible!!)

I could be wrong, but I think the Dead Sea is somewhere in Middle East. I just read on a site that some parts of the Dead Sea are 30% salt. I don't think fish could live in such harsh environment. I'm not 100% posititive about those stats, so don't quote me on it.

Nothing can live in the Dead Sea because of it's density of salt to water.  It's located in the Middle East, Israel.

I have been dying to try salt in the hair to see if the waves come out more.  I always hesitate to leave beach water in my hair because of all the sand and stuff. :P

I could swear that someone on this board had posted a while back about soaking in a tub with sea salt in it to enhance curls.  I wasn't able to find it in a search though.   :(

I can't remember what the dilution was, or how often it was used.  Most of the products made from dead sea salts claim to have a conditioning effect.  I've used soaps for my face with them and not had a drying effect.  

You should be able to find products like this at any of the natural food stores.  

Okay, I finally got some sea salt to experiment with.  The first time I made a spray with it, it made the last centimeter of my hair super dry and I had salt build up  :P.  However, it did enhance the waves in my hair A LOT, which is what I wanted.  So then I made another batch with less salt and the results were so much better :).  I also wanna try adding stuff to it to make it smell nice or give it more conditioning power. Hopefully, I can play with this more this weekend when I have more time.

~Oh and the info about the Dead Sea was neat :).  Don't we have a salt lake in Utah too or did it dry up?

Yep - the Great Salt Lake.  Its salinity level is 2nd to the Dead Sea.  

Interesting that the salt water enhanced your curls.  I will have to remember that!  ;D

Bardot,  how much salt-water did you use to make your spray?  I'd like to try this too but need some measurements.

Lets see. . .  :)

I used three cups water and added three teaspoons of coarse grain sea salt (I wish I had bought the fine grain though because the coarse takes a long time to dissolve).  When I used 5 teaspoons, that was way too much.  I haven't tried four yet though.  It also helps to use warm water to help dissolve the salt.

I also found some posts at Naturallycurly.com where other people have given their mixture measurements.  Some of them are using Epsom salt but I don't really know what that is.  Someone also mentioned adding honey which I think may be a good idea.  Here are some of the posts that give measurements and ideas
