Title: The Sword of Truth series
Post by Valerie on Aug 20th, 2005 at 2:27pm
Anyone read this series by Terry Goodkind?

I picked one of the later ones up as a book on tape as a way to keep my mind off my work outs, and have turned into a book on tape junkie.  There is no better way to have my 'escapist' tendencies while still getting things done like cleaning the house, and driving to and from work.   ::)

Anyway, in the series, part of the new world, 'the Midlands', a womans rank in society is depicted by the length of her hair.  No one can hair longer than the Mother Confessor, the ruler of the land.  I think the author intends for her hair to be just below BSL, but I always imagine it at classic length.  The author goes into a ton of detail on all the characters hair, and I can picture them all as if they were real people.

I've read the first one, and I imagined her hair about classic too, in a deep u cut to be more precise.

That sounds like an interesting read. I should look into it.

I definetly enjoy the series, but there are umm, odd things about it at times.  The female characters are very strong, emotionally and physically, but at times I get the distinct impression that the author does not think very highly of women.  At the same time though, I'm usually listening to the books, so I have the readers ideas about the characters in addtion to the authors.  And men in general can not do womens voices without coming off as whiny or sultry.

Thanks for the warning, Valerie. Yeah, I noticed that when some men write female characters, the women aren't all that convincing.

Ooh that sounds pretty interesting.  Never  read it, but I have heard of Terry Goodkind.  I'll have to browse through it the next time I look for a book to buy.

"Yeah, I noticed that when some men write female characters, the women aren't all that convincing"

Uh oh... :o

I write female characters often. The lead in my finished novel and one in progress are female. Not being a female, I often wondered how my characters played in the minds of a woman.

The third in progress is seen through the eyes of a male. Maybe this will be easier.

As a follower of your stories, I can say, Sir Rat, that you do a pretty good job of characterizing the teenaged female.  In fact, it is a bit scarey how well you do it!  ;D

I guess that is a bit scary.

Think it's time for a new chapter? Here's a preview bit for you..... This year, Kirby Ann lands a date to the Homecoming dance.........I sketched out her dress and hairstyle tonight. In the Sword and the Truth, Kirby Ann would be supreme ruler with her knee length tresses!

Actually, the first chapter of the 'Destiny" novel is finished and ready to upload. Interested in that one?

Aaagh! I hope you didn't think I was referring to you, because I wasn't. Honest! If it makes any difference, when I used to do a lot of creative writing I gave up trying to write a particular story from a guy's perspective. Since I'm not a man, it wasn't that good.

Now I wish I hadn't said that guys can't write women. But at least I wrote "some men" instead of "all men." *sigh* I'm going to find some place to hide for a while.  :-[

No need to hide, Juri! Come out from hiding!

This was a nagging question I have had for the two or so years writing the first novel. I'm glad you wrote what you did.

And yes, i noticed you wrote -some- men. Feedback is needed when writing.

Getting back to the original subject of this group of messeges, I'll relate a dream I had.

The dream was a network of women that lived on a bridge. The ones higher up had longer hair than the ones that lived lower. The lower ones would challenge the ones farther up. If successful, the higher one would have to cut her hair and the lower one took her place. If unsuccessul, the lower one would have to move to the bottom and cut any length of hair she had. The longer one lived at the top and warded off her challengers, the longer her hair grew. ::)

The thing that woke me from this dream was a bottom dweller challenged a waist length beauty at the top,... and won. :o

Yes, this was an odd dream, but at least I wasn't tortured or killed.  In fact, I was only a bystander in this one. The dream was through my eyes. :-/

*coming out from under my table* Thanks, Rodent! You're a good guy! :)

That's a weird, but very interesting dream! I've had some long-haired dreams, but they were rather boring compared to yours. I wonder if there could be a deeper meaning to that dream...

Yes, yes!  I'd love to read it!

Let me help you up from under that table. (offers hand to help).

"I wonder if there could be a deeper meaning to that dream... "

Probably so. Remember, this is a hair (cutting) dream not a long hair dream. I have these types of dreams occaisionally with my torture and death dreams.

I know some of the members at the many BBS that have to do with long hair were forced as a child to have short haircuts. This happened to guys, too. Maybe this is an underlying thing?   :-/ :-[

Thanks, again!

Now that you mention it, your dream does seem like a power struggle between a parent and child: one wants the other to get a haircut while the other one doesn't, and vice versa. Then the looser of the struggle has to do something she doesn't want to do. That might not be it at all, but it's one possibility.

"Yes, yes!  I'd love to read it! "

Sorry, but we had a meltdown here at the house around 11pm so it didn't get uploaded.

I read this afternoon about your adventures and the good deeds done by you and others. I always found when I was a member of the American Youth Hostles that during such bike rides, the camradre is such that no one will be lost or left behind. That seems to hold true today?

In my teen years, I was a pretty good bicycle mechanic. I met a lot of people fixing flat tires and broken chains and spokes on group rides.

About the broken fork on the $2K bike, was it aluminum? I am NOT a believer in the aluminum frame. The best performance and longer lasting are the titanium or the cheaper columbus 531 prevelent in the 80's.

Reading about your trip allowed me to relive the days I did overnights and century rides. If you guys ever want to ride the KATY trail here in Missouri, let me know (Maybe some advance warning to get back in shape).

I hope it is still true.  At least that is how we ride.  :)

It was a carbon fork.  Apparently it was the 2nd carbon fork he had break on him.  I don't think I would consider carbon after what I saw!

The KATY is a trail we would love to do sometime - I'll be sure to give you plenty of warning before we head down there!

I've read the books and it is one of my favorite series ever. On the cover of Soul of the Fire and Naked Empire, Kahlan's (The Mother Confessor) hair is a little past mid-back length and is v-cut. In the books, it says she hasnt been Mother Confessor for long so maybe she will grow it longer.
