Title: Coloring with Henna
Post by MillieBelle on Aug 13th, 2005 at 6:30pm
I colored my hair around 3 1/2 weeks ago trying to get it back a darker brown. The color has faded and my roots are starting to grow out. I would like to try the Henna haircolor but I'm not sure what color to get or what to buy since I've never used it before.

Can any of you give me some advice? My picture is under the Show Off Your Locks page topic title a bigger pic, if you want to offer color recommendations.

I'm sure people will have lots of good henna advice.  there can be a problem with layering different types of colorants and it's pretty close to when you did you last color.  Also, all henna is not equal...g

Beesan16- I've been looking into ordering this henna myself(from MM) possibly in the Marigold to start out
(I am growing out blonde highlights)
I amrather intimidated by the mess and long process it seems to take to apply henna.
Is Morrocco Method somewhat easy to apply and rinse out?

well when i use henna i let someone else put it on for me (especially after my hair started to grow long)

since it's sort of like mudd after you mix it, it's easier to wash out if you section your hair and stack them on top of each other neatly (carefull that it does not touch your ears cuz they could get stained  :-/)

oh, and if you add a little bit of plain yougurt to the mix it makes it more managable

Did you check out the step-by-step instructions, and the chart for which henna goes with your hair color?

hope this helps :) :)

Thanks Beesan16.
Yes I have checked out the instructions on the Morrocco site and also Madeline's twisted pagesand the henna for hair site-which it does seem like a lot of work, but worth it.
No I don't have anyone to help me- when I lived in a different state I had my best girlfriend who helped me apply a henna product years and years ago- something like Hennalucent- I didn't like the colour it turned out but I remember my hair felt wonderfully condtioned and it also faded out very fast.
I don't think dh would be interested in helping me-and I don't have anyone here so I'd be on my own.
I am planning- if I do it_ to use neutral or Marigold first- most likely from MM- and do it on a school day when ds's are in school and dh is at work so I have no interruptions.(dh isn't into hair stuff)So I will wait until September at least. I'm getting a trim on Sept 16(MM date) so I might wait until after then so my stylist doesn't say"What did you do to your hair! why is it green!" Just kidding.

That's a great one to start with, MillieBelle.  I mix a packet of the Earth Brown with a packet of the Sunset Glo and two translucent packets for my mix.  For me, it's just easier to buy from Sally's because we have several stores here in town and I don't have to pay shipping fees as I would if I bought from the internet.

And mixing the henna is so easy....plus I really like this brand.

A note:  If you do decide to Henna, if you mix the powder up with boiling water the night before you plan to henna, you will get a more vibrant result in less time since the Henna has had time to "set up"

But you can also mix the henna just before you put it on as well.  I like to do it this way because then the henna is a bit more forgiving.  If it drips on your skin, it's a lot less likely to stain than if the henna has been pre-mixed.  And I'm a little clumsy still with henna, so any help is great.  ;)

AND.... I mix my henna up with tea.  I make a big kettle of boiling water, and steep it over some regular dark tea, then pour that over the henna powder.  I mix that up really well, then go and wash my hair very well with shampoo, and comb it out.  By the time all that's done, the henna has cooled enough that I usually add a couple of eggs to the mix.  It helps the henna to stick to your hair better, plus the protein makes my hair shiney and soft.... just remember that if you add eggs don't forget to rinse with cold water or you'll have a head full of egg scrambles...  :D
