Title: backpacking Post by Valerie on Aug 10th, 2005 at 12:04pm
I'm going on my first backpacking trip this weekend (definetly a beginner level trip), and I'm trying to decide what to do with my hair. I don't want to have to bring any hair accessories, except what I have in my hair when I leave. No need to bring the extra weight, I figure.
So my ideas so far have been: Italian hair taping--would definetly keep my hair off my neck, but I don't have a lot of time to experiment, and that could become a real pain if it fell out on day 2. Or a classic french braid, with the ends tucked as much as possible. Any other suggestions? I'll be living with a bandana over my head to keep my hair protected from the sun so I'm not overly concerned with what it looks like by the end of day 3. |

This won't be much help, but since you don't have a lot of time to try Italian hair taping, I would go with the hair style that's worked for you in the past.
Have fun backpacking! |

Oh gosh - I second that. I've tried new stuff - even great new stuff and it can be very frustrating getting the kinks out when you don't want to be thinking about that...have fun BTW ;D...g

I'd go for a single or double braids with the scarf. If your braid is long enough, put it into a bun with a simple, inexpensive stick (twigs even work well).
Just remember to comb out your hair each day so it doesn't get matted. Where are you going backpacking? Sounds like fun! |

Ah!! How could I forget - BB suggested the double looped braids to me for running and that did work - first time trying it. All you have to finagle is how low you can stand the loop the hit.
It works GRRRrrrrrreat ...Thanks 'gain BB ;D...g |

I did a classic french braid, tucked up that worked quite well. I managed to tuck the ends up almost entirely, and our friend that went with us asked where I had put all my hair. ;D
I wasn't able to wrap the braids that were tucked under with the leather, but a few pins, and I didn't have any fuss with my hair the whole trip. I kept a pair of tights with the legs cut off over my hair most the time, covered with either a bandana or my winter hat. I'm going to post a picture of the curls I ended up with at the end of 3 days. The only side affect was that I missed putting sunscreen on just below my hairline one morning because the bandana was pulled down too low and got a little burned. We went to 11 Mile Reservoir, which is west of Colorado Springs. GORGEOUS area, and it was very fun. I feel very comfortable that we'll be able to do more challenging trips next spring. |

FUN! That is a beautiful part of the country. Sounds like you had a good time and found a great way to handle your hair.
I'd love to see the resulting curls! |

Welcome back Valerie! Colorado Springs!? I spent a year there in about 97-98! I thought the 11 Mile Reservoir sounded familiar. That is gorgeos country and I found the weather pretty darn nice as well. This time of year, I remember warm to hot days, and nice cool nights. Glad to hear the braids worked out. |

That sounds like it was a great trip! Welcome back! Thanks for sharing your hair experience. I never would have thought to put a stocking over my head, but now I know what to do should I ever go backpacking.

A couple scenary pics. I spent most the trip (when not pumping water, cooking, or cleaning) just thinking wow!
This one came out funky, but I think makes a great 'fantasy land' background. |

I'm glad you had a fun time backpacking. That's one of my favorite hobbies. I found that if I detangle everynight I before I go to sleep and tie my hair up in the morning for hiking then tangles are kept to a minimum. Just make sure you sleep with something under your head. Being tired after a long day I made the mistake of just lying down and not bothering to make a bed. Bad idea! I won the 'most objects sticking to/stuck in hair' award when I woke up the next morning.
