Title: Socks!
Post by bikerbraid on Aug 3rd, 2005 at 10:23am
Rather than further hijack another topic, I thought I'd start a new one over here (especially since it has nothing to do with long hair, other than my theory that people with long hair tend to "do their own thing", including unique fashion statements.)

Anyway, here's a picture of one of my sedate pairs of socks that I have knit recently.

What a great idea, BB! Your socks are very nice too- you have definitely eye for colors!  :)

I have been the "sockmaker" in my family for years. Every fall and winter, I have usually several requests from friends and family members. I've been even asked to sell my socks...but the fact is, that the ones with dozens of colors that everyone wants are quite work intensive and nobody would want to buy them if I priced them so that I would get even a small "salary". So, I've given every pair as a gift or swap . I usually get so many requests that I have very little time to knit for myself. Here are the only socks I could find from home (single ones have really a pair...somewhere). All are several years old and have been in heavy use (I don't usually manage to knit even one pair in winter for myself). I love making socks, it's such a nice and creative way to spend time.

Here are some pattern details.

I've found a sock sister!  :-*

Those are wonderful socks!  I love them!  I can see why everyone wants them.

Those socks are so cute! :D

BB and Galadriel, how long have each  of you been knitting?

I learned to knit when I was a Brownie Scout at about 8 or 9.  Then re-taught myself again when I was about 14.  I had not knit anything in almost 20 years, when I picked it up again about a year ago to knit mittens and socks for children in the old Soviet Block orphanages.

Knitting is not that difficult - there are basically 2 stitches - knit and purl.  If you knit in the round, you don't even have to purl much!

If you ask around, you'd be surprised how many people know how to knit and would be glad to show you.  And a note for you guys out there - Knitting, along with crocheting, macrame and tatting, were "invented" by men and was originally a male activity.  There is no reason why guys can't knit, crochet, or do other needle crafts!   :D

Knitting is such an admirable craft.  I would love to learn one day.  I know how to crochet, and tried to learn to knit from diagrams when I was about 10, but could not "get it".  I think it'd be easier to learn if I watched someone do it.

((((BB))))  ;D

I've "always" knitted. I learned some time as a kid -basic knitting was taught at school, and after that it was easy to learn more advanced things by myself. I have knitted something every fall/winter season since then. When I had more time, I made sweaters. Now that my life is busier, I do smaller projects like socks and mittens- whatever is needed.

Basics of knitting is easy. :) A scarf is a good first project.
If you select interesting thread, little beginners' problems like knitting too tight/loose don't show too much.

Well....... maybe......... some socks could find their way your direction, but since all my socks are custom made, I would first need to know lots of personal information like, what size shoe you wear, and what are your favorite colors!  ;D

Now I see what NR was saying on an earlier thread about sock pictures.
Beautiful BB and Galadriel!  I could do with socks like those -- a trademark of some of us at work are different socks.  I've been buying them, but hand-knitted ones - heaven!

Maybe I see some sock knitting in my future.  I just picked up crocheting and knitting again about a year ago(hmmm, about the time I got really serious about long hair).  I'm working on some very simple embroidery too.  Too hot now to want to have yarn draped around me 8)

That's such a nice thing to do for those kids!

It would be neat to learn how to knit, but it's almost never cold enough here to need knitted things. Maybe I'll learn when I go to the continental US for gradschool.
