Title: What shampoo/conditioner do you use?
Post by Luvlife on Jul 7th, 2005 at 3:37am
That's good for the hair, but won't let the hair lose any nutritions!

Thank you,  :)

I don't know about the whole nutrients thing...I dont see how by putting something on the outside of your hair, that it would help its condition. I think nutrients would have to come from a well balanced diet and maybe supplements. ???

For shampoos and conditioners I like Suave...Most any of the naturals. Sometimes for a deep conditioner I use Hask's Henna n placenta or mane n tail mixed in with my Suave. I like to stay away from cones, so Suave works well for that and ya cant beat the price.

If you'd like something to combat frizzies or to add moisture, as I am sure lots of people will say here...Oil, oil, oil. :) I personally like olive oil. I have only recently started using cocoa butter and find it a bit heavy while on and hard to remove...But my hair becomes super soft afterwards. :P

I'm not sure about the nutrients thing either.

The shampoo I use is from Nature's Gate (the jojoba one--it's pinkis in color), you can find it at some health food stores. It's a good shampoo, but can be hard to find.

Conditioner: I use Suave's Milk & Honey (I love it!) and Nature's Gate Aloe Vera (that one I don't love so much). I used to use The Body Shop's Brazil Nut Moisture Mask for deep conditioning, but I ran out and have been too lazy to buy more.

Hm,not sure about nutrition in shampoos/conditioners.......
But I use rather ''light'' shampoos on my hair,no silicones or too many conditioning ingredients that might build up rather quickly on my ultra-fine hair.I love the shampoo from Paula Begoun and RealPurity.
I also use a silicone-free conditioner(Matrix Biolage),although I don't use it full strength,always diluted with water.That's what works best for my fine,easily weighed down hair :)
For *nutrition* I take supplements,MSM and UltraHair.

I use Chagrin Valley's shampoo bars with ACV rinse. I don't need rinse-out conditioner, as shampoo bars are extremely gentle and conditioning.

For conditioning purposes, I use jojoba oil (with some EO's for deep conditioning), Body Shop's amlika leave in conditioner and sometimes XZ cone-free deep conditioner.

I'm with Atlantis Allure on this one, I'm very happy with the Suave Naturals line... though I only use mine for CoW (conditioner with shampoo mixed for a scalp wash) wash, and then some heavier conditioner (I need the -cones) for the length.  I just started using "Silk Elements" moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and I really love it.  It has silk amino proteins and keratin with makes my hair very soft and shiney and manageable.

I have also used translucent henna to deep condition, and that works awesome!   I also just bought a trial pack of the Hask's Henna and Placenta, but I haven't tried it yet, but will keep you posted.  ;)

I do the CO (Conditioner only) method.  So I like to use suave naturals conditioner and follow up with either infusium 23 or redken clear moisture.  My hair seems to gravitate toward cones.  I tried no cones for a week and I was one crabby human being. =P

I clarify with ACV or Lanza Solutions Urban Elements.

Louisemarielonghairs for me.

You could try to find someone with similar hairtype to yours and see how they have worked things out, or not :o.  Also, don't forget the product review section  ;D.

Often, in order to see how something will work for you you have to get the old product cleared out and give it at least a couple of weeks IMO (opinions vary)...g

you all are so helpful. One more question if you don't mind what products that are in shampoo's should a person avoid.

I remember once I used "L'oreal" and my hair looked so thin and became to soft to even put up in a bun.

Right now i'm using Nexxus. But i'm not sure if it is "GREAT"

Hmm, I think sodium lauryl and laureth sulfate are two things you might want to avoid. I can't remember the exact reason why, but I've heard that those two ingredients may be harmful to one's health.

SLS are very harsh cleansing agents.  SLS's can make long hair feel dry and parched.

My favorite shampoos and conditioners are Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Time Renewal, Mane N' Tail, Joico K-PAK, Infusium23, hairformula37, Dr. Miracles, Creme Of Nature, Garnier Fructis, Biologe, Matrix, Redken, Aussie, Salon Selectives, L'oreal Vive, Fantasia IC, Herbal Essences, Clarol Defense, and Pantene Pro-V Expressions for red hair.  My favorite deep conditioners are Cholestral Deep Conditioning Cream and Dark&Lovely Cholestral Deep Conditioner.  I use the Pantene products daily, and the rest I use daily too.  But the deep conditioners I use once or twice a week.  i like to switch up on products.  My hair behaves better that way.

I still love VO5.  I rotate between the Tea Therapy and the Kiwi Lime, and sometimes the Collagen.  I hope it's not hurting my hair (?), but I do have good growth and not many split ends, so I guess it's okay!

Occasionally I condition with coconut oil I buy at Whole Foods.

I have used only Aveda Madder Root shampoo and Rosemary Mint conditioner on my hair for the last 10 years or so. Now that I've gone more blonde I'll start using the Camomile shampoo when I run out of the Madder Root. I've occasionally tried a different brand, but nothing works like Aveda. It leaves my hair feeling the best in spite of the ridiculously hard watr we have here in Riverside CA.

I change very often but have been using John Frieda Brillant Brunette (Amber to Maple) most of the time. Usually something for colored hair.  I use leave in conditioner, very tiny amounts. Thermasilk straight & smooth leave-in cream most of the time.  I constantly try different things though.  If I use too much rinse out conditioner or a leave in, I feel it leaves a coating on my hair even though I use so little.  One thing I like to do when I put hand cream on my hands during the day, I run my fingers through my hair right after.  I get a nice shine that way.

I use Chagrin Valley shampoo bars, my current favorite of them being Summer Sunshine. I don't use rinse-out conditioner at all, just ACV rinse. Occassionally, I do a deep treatment with either a commercial cone free deep conditioner or using a homemade mix.

I get my emu oil shampoos and conditioners from the emu oil well, a family run business in Norfolk.
It contains no SLS ( Sodium lauryl Sulphate) or Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate which may cause irritation and no Parabens.
Also contains rosemary essential oil which is known for its stimulating effect on hair follicles.

Many people here are already aware of my affinity for Pantene.

Right now, I'm using Restoratives Breakage Defense S&C, but I'm also quite fond of Ice Shine and Restoratives Time Renewal formulas.  :)

I still love VO5 too.  I love the one with Callegen but I've never tried the one with Kiwi Lime.  I've tried Strawberries & Cream and that is very delicious!!!  Oh no, I don't think Alberto- VO5 is hurting your hair at all.  Especially if you have hair like me.  I've been using VO5 ever since the 1980's, and it has never hardly cause any split ends of damaged hairs at all.

Right now I'm hooked on Giovani's 50/50 moisture balance shampoo.  I use a mixture of conditioners blending the 50/50 with their Nutrafix conditioner.

I'm going to buy some Audrey Organics shampoo and conditioner just out of curiosity.  I want to see how their stuff stacks up next to Giovanni products.

Advertisement, are they really true? Like 'Herbal Essenses' for example. Are they any good? I don't really know at all which will work or not, which is best for hair.
"repairs broken and damafed hair", is this true for some products? If so... which? :'(

Title: Re: What shampoo/conditioner do you use?
Post by Angel Spun on Jul 5th, 2007 at 4:51pm
Advertisements are just marketing. Whether a product will work for you or not is all about trial and error. Dry hair can be repaired, but once hair is damaged, the only way to "fix" it is to cut it off. Products can really only repair the way hair looks and feels. If you have split ends, no amount of product can help - just cut them off.

I agree with Angelspun,  unfortunately damaged hair must be cut off  :'(.  I am currently using Porosity shampoo and conditioner.  My hair and scalp dont feel dry or stripped, the smell doesnt irritate my asthma, and the products dont mess with my psoriasis.  I am considering trying to do a conditioner wash only.  So I will know in the next few weeks how that will go.

Sorry.  *hugs* But you'll just have cut off the damaged part.  And you should cut off the damaged ends as sometimes the damage can travel up.  And your hair will look and be healthier as the damaged part is gone.

Oh, don't look at those pantene commercials.  They use a bit of photoshop in those commercials.

The Body Shop's honey shampoo and conditioner. Since I have rather dry and wavy/curly hair I also have their leave-in, deep conditioner with coconut and on top of that I use jojoba oil.  :P I HATE too many -cones (silicone) in hair products, they ruined my hair.  >:( Made me cut off quite a lot- but I tried to think happy thoughts lol.  ;) It's in so much better condition ( = prettier  ;) ) now so it was worth it.  :)

I've been using Avalon organics lavender nourishing shampoo because, well, it's cheap, and it's organic.  It has done really well for me.  I have always been blessed with thick full volume hair, and this stuff hasn't changed that a bit.  It has a very pleasant smell too.  Compared to the Dove shampoo that I used to use, it doesn't leave my hair feeling slick, it just feels soft, but keeps the natural texture.  I like it, and would recommend it to anyone that doesn't need any extra volume from their daily wash.   I've also been using my new GHD hair straightener right after the wash and I haven't seen nor felt any damage from it, so I say it's definitely a mix of the two products.

Hey AngelSpun, Good Evening to ya!!  I have been using the Pantene for greying hair lately, and I like it.  It cleans my hair without that just stripped feeling.  I am thinking of going to the Ice Shine next.  Then maybe onto something else.  I think I am on a "shampoo roll here"  ::).

Hey there, Debr.  :)

Glad to hear that you're liking Pantene. Are you using the Silver Expressions S&C? I haven't tried anything from the Expressions line, but several members here have raved about it. My mother uses Red Expressions and my paternal grandmother used the dark Brunette Expressions before she passed. So maybe the need for Pantene is genetic for me.  ;D

I just started using Ice Shine S&C today and it has become my new favourite.  :D  After having tried almost every brand from A - Z, I've permanently settled on Pantene. Not to say that I won't still try new things on occasion, but I know what works best for me. I encourage you to do the same. Try this, try that, try it all. It's just shampoo - and you'll definitely have some notable experiences along the way.  ;)

Shampoo and conditioner... I'm still trying to find one that doesn't make my hair go ick.

I was justing Herbal Esseses, but then I started to find that it wasn't cleaning my hair, but rather leaving a nice gunky feeling behind.

Recently I bought an organic brand of shampoo and conditioner, A'kin (or something like that).  I used it last night and it left my hair feeling so clean and soft :) so I'll probably keep trying that brand and see how it goes.  Will probably only use the other brand once in a while.

But sadly... the cutting is imminent, I need to cut some of the dry blond chunks off next week :(

I've changed my hair care routine recently, thought I'd re-add:

I'm now using sulfate free shampoos ONLY.. really like Burt's Bee's raspberry and soy shampoo, and the grapefruit and sugarbeet version.  I tried Avalon Organic's Lavendar shampoo, but it makes my hair sticky and gets greasy fast.

As for conditioner, I do like the Burt's Bee's versions, plus I like the Avalon Lavendar, and Nature's Gate herbal condish.  I can use the herbal conditioners for deep treatments; they don't have any alcohol in them so they don't dry out my hair and make it frizz, but I do need a little silicone product to make detangling easier.  My final condition is usually with a -cone product, a little dallop of John Frieda's redhead condish does wonders.

For shampoo, I use Johnsons & Johnsons Baby Shampoo. It's one of the very few shampoos I've found that doesn't have Sodium Laureth Sulfate or similar chemicals in it. It's very mild, doesn't make my hair dry. I also love it as a body and face wash, because it doesn't dry out my skin. I use small amount of shampoo, like a teaspoon, and just focus on the scalp. It hardly foams. It frequently feels like I haven't shampooed at all when I rinse the shampoo out. I used Dr. Bronner's castile soap for awhile, and at first it was fine, then I noticed it was leaving soap scum in my hair. :-/

For conditioner, I use Pantene for Straight Hair. It doesn't straighten my hair, but it does make it less frizzy than the curly version. It makes my hair fine, soft and shiny, I love it. I have really thick frizzy hair, so the finer it is, the better. I've tried Suave, VO5, Herbal Essences, and Willow Lake, but I hate the sticky feeling of them. And they don't seem to do anything to my hair. I use a large amount of conditioner, like a couple tablespoons, and completely coat my hair.

Hi earthnut,

I don't think there's nothing wrong with using Johnson&Johnson shampoo.  I've heard that it's gentler and better on the hair.  Especially if you're someone like me that shampoos frequently.  It is much milder on the hair.  Now as far as conditioning I use lots and lots of conditioner too.  I have to use 2 tablespoonfuls of conditioner too.  Especially on my below the shoulders hair.  I can very much remember when my hair was at the stage and length yours is now.  To me, it is at the stage of between wanting to cut it or let it grow.  Well, when mine was at that stage I said to myself that I am not cutting my hair anymore.  I am going to let it grow and keep it long forever.

Why did you shave all of your butt-length hair off in high school and college???  I've thought of shaving my head in my life several times but I didn't act on it.  Because, a lot of people told me of how I would look if I did so, and they all said that it wouldn't be a pretty look.  Well, encourage people that want to grow their hair long or grow it long again, "Go for it!"  I'm trying to grow mine floor length.  That's my goal.  I've been wanting my hair floor length all of my life.  Well, at first I was shooting for classic or tailbone length.  Then ever since I've seen a girlfriend of mine with floor length hair it made me want to grow mine like that.

We're tight financially and I'd run out of shampoo so I casually added it to the regular shopping list.  Huge mistake!  Hub bought me some BIG and soft :-? clear pastic bottle with 500ml of some purple stuff that cleans scalp okay but I'm not sure if it's any good for my hair.  Maybe I worry unnecesarily.  SENSE is what the "brand"/no brand is called.

I've been piling on the conditioner every day.  I have porous Asian hair that's prone to dryness.  I'm currently using some straight hair conditioner from Pantene and 3 times a week I use Schwarzkopf GLISS 1 minute intensive treatment.

But now the supermarket is stocking an organic brand that's well known here in Denmark.  In fact it's so organic that it really smells a bit too herbal for most people's comfort but if it does less harm to my hair and since it's actually quite cheap, I may go that way from now on.

I had bra length hair when I first joined this forum.  Then I had it cut to a mid neck bob at the end of December which I had trimmed twice, the last time being at the end of March.  It's now near the bottom of my neck and I hope it'll be shoulder length or a little longer at the end of the summer.   My hair's typical Mongolid Asian so it grows relatively fast.  Aprox. 2cm a month in the winter and a little more  in the summer so I'm not exactly devastated but it's taken some time to admit to myself that the asymmetrical bob with asymmetrical bangs was a huge mistake ::)  Last time I had it corrected so that the sides are only slightly graduated and the back is all one length.  I posted about this on the Asian hair board.

From now on I'll try to take better care of it by avoiding hairdryer, styling products and I'm going organic or as close to organic as possible.  Urtekram is the brand I'll be trying.  I'll post back and let you know what I think of their shampoo and conditioner.

Title: Re: What shampoo/conditioner do you use?
Post by Drear on Apr 8th, 2008 at 10:04am
I've been reading back on old threads and I read some mention of Sunsilk which is one of the common brands my local supermarket stocks.  I may try that brand if Urtekram doesn't deliver what it promises.  I can always go back to Gliss and Pantene because they seem to work for my hair.

I've only been washing my scalp and not my hair since I was 12 which I mentioned in a thread I just revived.

When it comes to combing/brushing I'm no good.  I own a round brush which I only occasionally used for the short time I was still happy with my bob.  I own a paddle brush which I only ever used when I had long hair if I had to style my hair up and until I had my bob cut, I had never owned or used a hairdryer.

Most days I air dry and finger comb and that's what I've been doing as far back as I can remember.  My hair isn't dense but it's thick/coarse so it sort of just falls into place anyway and I can't remember ever having had a tangle except for the two times in my life when I had perms.

I walked into my regular salon and said I needed a leave-in conditioner because my hair misbehaves mid day no matter which conditioner I've used.  All the oiling and deep conditioning in the world has only slightly improved the problem.

When my hair was BSL it was heavy enough to hold itself down by the weight of my hair but now that it's shortish it's a nightmare and I fear that the mid length will be the worst.

She recommended Pure PACT ylang ylang conditioning mist which is a leave-in weightless conditioner for dry and damaged hair.  I use 3-4 spritzes and comb through my hair.  It's sadly costly because it's addictive and I love the fragrance!  The bottle is only 8,43 fl. oz. or 250ml so it won't go very far.  So I have to carefully choose the days I want to use it, days where it's important to look my best.

I wish my hair could smell of ylang ylang every day.

Drear, consider making your own hair mist with Ylang Ylang essential oil!

http://www.naturesgift.com/essential/descriptions-y.htm#YLANGYLANG

I've dealt with this company and have had very good experience.  I'm not sure what their international shipping is.

Thanks.  I wonder if I could find a neutral unscented leave-in conditioner and mix in some ylang ylang fragrance oil drops and then buy one of those flower spray things to spray it on?  Just a thought I had.

Hello ... I am new to this here but I am partial to Pantene Pro-V Shampoo followed but their conditioner. I love the way my hair feels and responds after. :)

I mix and match with shampoos and conditioners.

I usually use Herbal Essences shampoo and conditoner in coconut scent.
And I also use  Suave, TreSemme conditioners, Aussie and I just purchased a product called Back to Basics, the green tea one.

Hi!  I tried a smaple of Garnier Fructis once and I found it very harsh on my hair;even with the conditioner.  I definately didn't like and don't recommend it to anyone who wants to know what to try.
Always condition your hair.  There are so many benefits to it. Detangle, smooth, etc.
Try different shampoos and conditioners for your hair type.  Your hair will let you know what it likes and doesn't like!  Good luck! :)

Hi and welcome to LongLocks, thin&straight.  For sure, start conditioning every time you shampoo!!!
I have curly hair so I don't know what brands to recommend.  Your hair might love or it might hate -cones, so check the labels for that.

Good Luck!

Ditto what the other ladies have said. Long hair must be conditioned. Actually, it's best for hair of any length.

Personally, I've never used Garnier Fructis but have heard some pretty bad reviews. :o I'm a natural straightie myself and Pantene works best for me.

You'll have to try different bands & products to see what works for your hair and what doesn't.

hello and welcome! :)

Glad we were able to help you out. Though you may not like it, yes, you definetly need to get your ends trimmed soon. When you have damage and split ends, the damage always travels up the hair shaft when not tended to and just gets larger and larger. The longer you wait the more hair you will have to cut off. So trim soon! Might I also link in the ultimate guide to growing long hair and keeping it healthy? (http://www.longlocks.com/how-to-grow-long-hair.htm) It's got some great tips on the exact same things you've been asking about. So good luck!

My two cents...I always like to change to a different brand each time the one I am using is empty. Read something years ago saying this was a way to prevent buildup. Seems to work, my sister used to do the same thing.

My hair is fairly fine so I wash my scalp but only condition from about the neck down. I'm just finishing up with Suave Naturals - Fresh Mountain Strawberry and will be beginning with Pantene - Beautiful Lengths.

Used to use Johnson's Baby Shampoo and their separate Conditioner but haven't been able to find the conditioner for years. I always figured if it was safe for babies it would be safe for anyone.

Just a bit obsessive I suppose, but I have always used  products from the same line.

Another shampoo & conditioner that I liked and that seems to have disappeared was Breck. Anyone else old enough to remember the "Breck Girl"? ;)
