Title: Honey Post by Trisha on Apr 29th, 2005 at 1:39pm
I'm dying to use honey on my hair but I'm not sure how or what to do...I read somewhere that honey can be used as a sort of hair mask. Like, you just put some on/in your hair, slip on a shower cap and leave it on for about half an hour, letting your body heat wam up the honey in order for it to do its thing. 'Course my hair is still fairly short so it would be easy for me to do.
Anybody else have a honey of a hair recipe? ;) Gabi, I read where you even put honey in your shampoo, is that right? |

I like to add a squirt of honey and some aloe vera gel to conditioner--makes it work much better, and it makes a good deep conditioning treatment--cover and leave in for as long as you can stand it. You can add honey to shampoo, or dilute honey in water to make a final rinse (makes the hair shiny). Mixing honey with a couple of crushed aspirin tablets makes a nice face mask and helps to get rid of blackheads.
I've never heard of coating your hair with straight honey. I'd imagine it would be difficult to work through your hair, even if you warmed it first. And trying to wash stiff sticky honey hair? Not for me, thanks. 8) |

I made an awesome hair rinse with vinegar and honey. I heated a cup of water and dissolved 3 generous Tablespoons of honey in the water then put it in a plastic pitcher. I added 2 cups of white vinegar and filled the rest with warm water from the shower. I think I also added some sandalwood essential oil.
This is the extent of my experience of honey and my hair. |

I mix it half and half with CO - LOVELY! But you've got to start with a really thick CO, otherwise it gets runny and icky.

I don't put it in the shampoo - I mix it about half and half with whatever rinse out conditioner I'm using and then use a hair dying squirt bottle with honey and vinegar mixed (I just eyeball it at about a .5 oz mix to 4 oz water approx) and pour that on the scalp right over that mess - then rinse out. I vary it and don't do it all the time but it is nice and slippery and detangling ;D...g |

I've only tried one honey recipie that someone had posted in a hair care community on livejournal. It involved honey, yogurt, and bananas. Sadly I didn't get great results, it dried out my hair and left it feeling unclean, I gave in and washed it. Twice in as many days, which I hate having to do, but it just didn't feel good. It may have been the rest of the recipie that caused this but she had said it did wonders for her so I thought I'd give it a shot. A few other girls got results similar to mine.

I don't use that method anymore but when I did it was either in the rinse out conditioner and/or in the vinegar final rinse out - 1 part vinegar, one part honey, ten parts water approx to that - in a squirt bottle, rinse it all out ...g

I finally got around to experimenting a little with the honey idea. In about 2 ounces of conditioner (i'm using Suave juicy green apple) I added a good teaspoonful of honey. Conditioned my hair as usual after shampooing. I'm on day 3 of using my honey conditioner and my hair is very soft! In fact, for now, I've stopped using aloe or any other kind of styling products because my hair seems to be behaving itself quite well.

Thanks for the update Trisha. The mad scientist in me might give this a whirl as my hair has been behaving so well, time for an experiment!

Just like 13bodies, I used honey and aloe with my final conditioner for a moisture treatment. It truly is wonderful! I use about a tbl of conditioner, tbl of honey tsp of aloe. work thru hair, clip on top of head with a clip while I finish rest of showering...and rinse. Yummy hair, and it really brings out my wavies!

i got a book from the library called, Naturally Healthy Hair- herbal treatments and daily care for fabulous hair. by- mary beth janssen. she has a lot of info about honey.
she has a yummy recipie for dry hair: Moisturizing Banana Hair Conditioner one small ripe banana one tablespoon honey one teaspoon almond oil basically you just mash up the banana add the honey and oil, and put on freshly shampooed hair. then cover your hair with a plastic bag and leave it on for about 30 minutes then rinse i haven't personally tried it though i will in the coming week, GOOD LUCK :D |
Title: Re: Honey Post by novusfemina on Aug 31st, 2005 at 6:59pm
Good luck, Beesan! And Rogue... I hope it works out for you.
I am LOVING!(!!!) my honey-vinegar rinse... 4 generous TBS of honey dissolved in a cup of warm water, then like.. two TBS of ACV and another two cups of cool water to top it off.... I make sure all my hair gets saturated, and I don't rinse it out... My hair is so slippery and soft and SHINEY!!!! Love it! |
Title: Re: Honey Post by khrome on Sep 1st, 2005 at 12:16am
I tried a honey ACV rinse last night too. I think I liked it better than just ACV - my hair seemed less flat after it dried. But I'm still experimenting, so I don't know if I"ll like it long-term.
Be careful making the banana mixture! I've seen two posts so far (can't remember who) and they had a hard time getting the banana strings washed out. So you probably want to make it in a blender full-blast, or "shave" the strings off. I think you can run the edge of a spoon down the sides to get them off. Cynde |

Another trick to prevent the banana strings is to peel the banana from the bottom up. |

Thanks BB and Khrome! :)
actually i read that post too, and i was going to put it in the blender anyway (i don't think i can make it as *smooth* as it's supposed to be- i don't need chunks og banana in my hair :P |

In all my 32 years I never even THOUGHT to peel a banana the other way. Ingenious! I'm really craving a smoothie now. Cynde |

I mixed olive oil and about 3 tbs honey and used it as a deep conditioner. It worked pretty good on my hair. :)

Title: Re: Honey Post by ChiliPepper on Sep 7th, 2005 at 1:48am
What is your hair like? I have really fine hair so I am a little cautious about what I put on my hair.

Title: Re: Honey Post by Moonchild on Sep 7th, 2005 at 5:39am
Understandable :)
I am trying a lot of things right now. My hair is a 1bNii |
Title: Re: Honey Post by Babyfine on Sep 7th, 2005 at 12:58pm
I've always wanted to try honey as I've read such rave reviews about it- but I'm a little hestitant to use it-sounds like it would be sticky and hard to get out!

Title: Re: Honey Post by gabi on Sep 8th, 2005 at 5:24am wrote on Sep 7th, 2005 at 12:58pm:
There is no harm in trying it at all - honey is totally soluble in water. Some people even leave a little in - but I can't say I'd recommend that ...g |
Title: Re: Honey Post by Superfine on Sep 13th, 2005 at 2:50pm
novusfemina---sounds like a good recipe. Do you do seperate rinses....as in first the honey & warm water rinse and then the ACV and water rinse? Do you do these rinses AFTER conditioning and then leave in??

What kind of wash do you do? I am interested and want to know if your way of doing it is similar to mine. What part of the wash do you use this type of ACV? Meg |
Title: Re: Honey Post by 13bodies on Sep 29th, 2005 at 8:21pm
I had some apricot-peach honeybush teabags that I didn't like so I used some in my herbal hair rinse. They have some dried honey in them and they leave my hair all shiny! There can't be much in them--the honey is the last ingredient listed and I use one bag to 2 cups of water, but I'm definitely shinier. ;D

I've used honey to lighten and I love it! It rinses out easily, don't worry!
I just posted this in my Herbal Hair Color post, but let me show y'all here too! Here's my hair after a few hours sitting in the sun with a (rather sticky) lightener made of alfalfa honey, tea made of chamomile and mullein, and a squeeze or two of lemon. If you compare to my avatar photo, you can see how nicely it lightened my really dark hair, and the shine and bounce was tremendous! ;D Mellie |

Wow, Mellie, I would never have thought of using honey as a lightner. The color is great! :)

i have another honey question. i've heard a honey mask is good for clarifying sensitive skin. does anyone have a recipe for a honey skin mask, please?
|
Title: Re: Honey Post by Sakina on Nov 9th, 2008 at 10:27am
RTG, I think you just put the honey right on your face. It might get drippy, so protect your hair. Leave on 15 mins. or so and wash off w/a soft cloth and warm water.
Good Luck! |

I mix honey with a regular face mask. I just take the store bought mask and use half the amount I normally would and blend it with an equal amount of honey. I find that way it doesn't drip and you get more benefits. It makes my skin very soft and keeps it from getting really dry. I personally do this once a week and use a mask with green clay. But any relatively thick mask would work. I leave it on the length of time the listed for the mask. If it's too thick to spread well you can add a little water/floral water/milk to thin it. If it's too runny you can add more mask or honey. Good luck! |

thanks, ladies, i'll give this a shot.

I make a hair mask by mixing a teaspoon of honey, 1 egg yolk and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. I leave it on for about half an hour (under a plastic wrap) and then wash hair as usual. Makes it soft and shiny :)

Title: Re: Honey Post by Tara on Aug 25th, 2009 at 1:08pm
I still haven't tried honey in my hair >_>, but this time I really am going to try it tonight, but there are so many different ways to use it! I don't use conditioner on my hair right now, so I can't mix honey in that, but I do ACV rinse, so maybe I will try that version first.
How many of you leave the ACV rinse in vs rinse it out? When I normally do ACV I rinse thoroughly afterward, should I not be? Also, if I miz water + ACV + Honey, and saturate my hair and DO NOT rinse, isn't that going to leave a weird film on my hair? Has anyone done this? I saw one poster who said they didn't rinse but I forgot who it was >_< Also, Khrome, I am SO jealous of your hair, it is GORGEOUS!!! My hair is the same length (but black) and I have been struggling ridiculously with tangling so I can never wear it down, and yours is amazing and shiny and smooth!! I'm actually getting kind of depressed about it because it's been so long of the rough tangles that now my hair has split and dead ends all over the length of it. I think I am going to have to cut like half of it off :'( anyway I hope honey will make is shiny and softer! /crosses fingers OH and I almost forgot, does anyone know what the significance of banana is? What exactly does it do for the hair? |
Title: Re: Honey Post by Curlgirl64 on Aug 25th, 2009 at 6:38pm
Hmm,not sure about the banana, sorry. As for the rinsing of ACV or not to rinse, the choiice is really up to you or should I say what your hair like! Test both ways and then you can decide. As for the honey,me personally wouldn't use it because I'm a pescatarian, borderline vegan. If I did use it, I would rinse. Just my input!

Hi, Tara. My wavy hair tangles pretty easily and I've been using Max Green Alchemy scalp therapy. The conditioner has amazing detangling properties-best I've ever used.
