Title: decision to make!
Post by ellasongbird on Apr 25th, 2005 at 6:28pm
OK. I'm going for a trim on Thursday (right before "someone special" comes to visit me...lol...) and suddenly I'm very indecisive.

My last few attempts at a blunt cut when my hair was short didn't look very nice. One reason that so far I've kept my layers and made no attempt to even them out. But some factors are different now. My hair is a little thicker (a result of being nice to it for once) and a little straighter (I moved to a dry climate last month),. Before it was so thin that it fell plastered against my head in a very limp, unattractive shape...except for the ends, that curled up in various directions because the Florida humidity was doing a number on my hair all the time. TACKY looking! The only way to give it a nice shape was to unpack the blowfryer and heat blast it into submission.

So I was pretty well convinced that I needed to keep up the layers until my hair was longer. Plus, there is the factor of splits because my hair breaks and splits so easily...if I just let the layers grow and grow until they catch up with the rest of my hair, how will I head off splits in those layers of hair?

But my hair is suddenly looking fuller and straighter and falling in a very nice shape, and I'm starting to wonder if it would be safe to start evening out the layers. I'm getting very eager for the layers to catch up with the rest of my hair so that I can do more to it.

SO, the decision I'm wondering about it whether I should have just the bottom layer trimmed, or all of it? I do have a stylist here that can neaten up my layers very nicely without hacking off several inches in the process, so I'm not worried about losing too much. I'm just unsure whether or not it's time to start evening out.

Bah. Indecisive me, and over something so silly.

You are indecisive because there is no clear answer.   :-/

Growing out layers always requires these kinds of decisions - do you go for length or even up the layers?

I think you have to go with what you feel looks good at the time.

Quite True!  Layers, the bane of growing hair :P

i prefer layers on hair shorter than waist, unless it's stick straight and lacking volume already. but the problem is you most  probably need a stylist to do it and they sure like to cut! i think if i would have been at a shorter length right now i'd do it myself by bending over and cutting straight across and then shaping it into a soft v or u. it's also the only method that wouldn't break hairs. mine were done with a razor and everytime i needed several hours to cut away all the broken hairs since they don't cut the hair perpendicularly. once you grow hair, i think it's stylists you have to avoid, not layers i'd say. you'd have plenty of time to grow them out anyhow, unless you go without trimming at all, but i wouldn't recommend that one.

I think that, seeing as how you're indecisive about it, you should just trim 1/2" off the bottom. Later you can trim off more if you are sure.

Huh.

Well.

The hair in the short layers (SO FAR) isn't showing any splits, so it SEEMS like it would be okay to leave that part alone for the time being. And I hadn't thought about the whole issue of the razor...I don't think I want my hair cut with a razor anymore. It was kind of necessary at first but now that it's getting a bit longer I'm getting worried about what that would do to my hair.

So I think I'm leaning in favor of only trimming off the bottom 1/2" or so.

*ponders*

Plus, the shortest layers are finally starting to show some length (only a few inches until they reach my chin!) and I don't know if I can bear to let anyone shorten them again. They look really nice.

I'm of the 'dont cut at all' opinion.  My longest layer, in back, is mid neck; the shortest layer, on top, just reached the top of my ear.  Unless I start getting splits, I'm pretty determined that nothing sharp will touch my hair for at least one year, maybe two.  But that's just me.  It sounds as if you trust your stylist.  Why not ask her/his opinion?  That's IF you truly trust your stylist...and of course, let us know what you decide!   :)
