Title: "old" lady long hair sightings Post by PreciousLocks on Mar 19th, 2005 at 12:28am
Psssst -- I've been noticing more and more "older" women growing out their hair recently. Maybe those of us in our 40's and 50's are finally getting smarter! ;D

I see it all the time. Dunno, maybe it's regional but around here, Bay Area, it's really not at all unusual to see women looking good and well groomed with grey hair down to their waists - YAY ...g

I saw a woman maybe in her 40's at the zoo the other day with two heidi-type braids down to classic. She had a bandana wrapped around her head, with the braids sticking out. Looked good!

Bay Area.. watch out... those grannies where probably taking to the streets 30 to 40 years ago defending our rights as women to be able to have the controle over our own bodies.
I've never understood how the long hair was connected to the movement back then... be it Janis Joplin or whatever since long hair seems to me to be very retro, victorian, or tribal oriented and i would have thought that 'boy cuts' would have been all the rage.. in fact i refused to wear my hair long for years because i did not want to be forced into stereotypes. |

Okay, okay, as a genteel, 42 year old, I do not think a woman in her 40s or 50s is old. :D
That said, you folks see a lot more young at heart people in your area than I do in mine. Granted, at the Ren-Fests, I see many folks with long hair; however, just bee-bopping around town, not so much here. |

Many kind thanks for that also! Especially helpful as I got a couple of remarks last night that weren't too complimentary, although they weren't meant that way. One was expressing concern that I looked tired with worry lines on my face--and the other guy couldn't keep his foot out of his mouth adding that it was age not worry. Now I know both of these guys are really sweethearts, and I really do let things roll off my back, however.... :-X :-/ ::) (guy number 2 realized as soon as that quip popped out of his mouth he was in big trouble! lol) And the truth of the matter is they were both right! :P |

When I was about 5, I was standing in line at the grocery store with my mother. There were two Indian (not native American) women in line in front of us. The older lady was wearing a sari, and her hair was in a braid that fell past her knees. The bottom half was black, and the top was grey/white.
I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I have never forgotten that lady. When I was in college, I had a professor with a waist length braid. The top half of hers was also grey, the bottom half blonde. I decided I needed to grow out my hair because I wanted to have that long, long color changing braid someday too! My husband really hates the 'old lady Q-Tip look' as he calls it, and he has made me promise to never go there. ;) He also goes out of his way to go up to older women who have long hair and compliment them. I think long white hair looks very elegant! |

Yesterday evening while I was driving home I saw a lady with gorgeous, long white hair. She was running across the street. Most of her straight, midback length hair was silver white, the bottom six inches or so were blonde. So pretty!

Ooh, I remember a woman I had in a class in college. She had amazing silver-gray hair cut in a bob, and always wore a nice black dress to class. She was very tall and thin. She had a British accent, and when she talked, she would kind of hold her pencil like those 40's starlets would hold a long cigarette holder. Like Cruella de Ville, just not as scary. :) That's when I decided I wanted to go immediately all-gray instead of salt-n-pepper in between.

Wow, this thread is almost a year old!
My "old lady" long hair sighting occured in the parking lot of a Burgerville resteraunt. (A local burger chain.) She looked to be in her 60's, and her silver hair was in one long braid - that went down to mid-calf! :o |

Wow - a mid-calf braid. I'd love to have seen that.

Never noticed this thread before... I am the "old lady" with long hair in my area, to my waist right now. Folks look at me funny when I wear it down. Usually, I keep it up in some sort of bun or braid. Can't wait till it gets to classic, and when it is totally gray instead of salt and pepper.
