So we all love long hair, but I'm curious, does anyone else love long nails?  I'm in the process of growing my nails out to 2/3."  They are at about 1/3" right now and I've never had them 2/3" long and am wondering if they will start breaking soon.  
When my nails get to about a half inch I'd like to have nailart done on them (visit www.nailartgallery.com) and get hairsticks to match my nails since I'm not real interested in fashion and the most interesting thing I'll usually wear is a red turtleneck!  So I guess nails and hairsticks will kinda be 'my thing.' ;)  Knowing me and the way I collect things, I'll probably end up with about 200 hairsticks...lol.  
If you personally have long nails, what do you do to maintain them?  I paint my nails with NailMagic twice a week (on top and also underneath the nail) and file any rough edges off with a fine-tooth emory board.  About once a week I soak my cleaned nails in Polident to help get them clean.  

I've been a chronic nail biter my whole life.  I had acrylic nails put on while I had a 2nd job for a while, and am trying not to bite them now that the fake nails are off.  So far, I'm pretty much failing, and will probably put the acrylic nails on again if I want to quit biting all of my nails off.  I can't stand long nails on me though either.  If they are past my finger tips, I can't do anything.  

I love long finger nails but I do lots of crafts projects  and have a bad habit of using my fingernails to scrape excess glue, paint etc.  :-/ It seems like I just get my nails looking nice at the same length then end up breaking a couple off.  :'(

My fingernails don't grow. I don't even have to bother filing them- they wear as they grow and stay always short. If I want to have long nails for a special occassion, I use fake nails. I'm pretty glad of my fingernails, though. They might not be pretty, but they are always comfortable.

nope, no long nails here either.  My nails always chip or rip before they get any real length.  That's okay though, I really can't have long nails with my job--I'd end up scratching people.  And so many of the people I work with already have such thin skin they get skin tears or bruises almost by just looking at them :-/
So, long hair will be my feminine declaration (sorry long hair gents, but it does make me feel more feminine, especially when I'm spending the days playing amazon woman to bedbound patients!)

i hope there is a correlation between good quality and fast growing nails and hair. not that i think my nails or hair grow a lot faster than averge but the outgrow on my little and ring finger (less used) are still easily 1/2" (and that's just the outgrow, the white part i mean). but before i started taking birth control pills i once grew the outgrow of my left ring finger up to 2 inches, but one morning i woke up and it was all bent so i cut it off, i still have it somewhere.

I've always found well kept long nails to look lovely. Unfortunately, mine aren't always in the best condition. I don't really take any particular care of my nails, though I do file them when they get rough around the edges.
They tend to break off and then grow out again pretty regularly, I suppose because I'm pretty rough with them in day to day life.
Maybe someday I'll start taking better care of them, it's something I'd like to do, but don't know much about or remember to put time into like I do with my hair.

I would LOVE to have long, beautiful nails.  Unfortunately I have been a nail biter most of my life.  I have gotten better about it and grow my nails out to "sport" length from time to time, but they never last too long.  Having to type all day long and doing all my needle crafts makes it hard to have nails that are very long.

I love long nails and don't have a problem growing them.  But, with the job I have right now, it's pretty much impossible to have them.  I do a lot of typing commands into a computer and changing paper in 3 printers so chips, cracks and breaks would be a daily occurence.   :(

i've noticed milk is for me the absolute necessity to maintain them at a certain length. soy milk, even with calcium NEVER replaced that.

I love long nails-I was even born with 'em.  They had to trim them right away so I wouldn't scratch my newborn face!  I'd love to keep my nails long now, but having taken up playing the guitar ruins that idea.  If I don't pay attention, they grow like weeds.  I must trim them 2-3 times a week for guitar.
I don't know where you are on the planet, nysq, but I'd recommend a glass nail file.  In AZ I get mine at a beauty supply called Beauty Emporium.  It's a bit pricey, but worth it.  No tearing the nail.  They are designed for natural nails, only.  I use it on my toe nails, too.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes long nails!!!  it seemed at first that i was all alone with my nail obsession...lol.  
Sakina, I will look into getting a glass nail file.  I've noticed the regular files do tend to tear the nail, especially the rougher grained ones.  I haven't had too many problems with the fine-grained ones, but I'll definitely look for the glass ones if they are made for natural nails.  Thanks!

I am trying to quit biting my nails, without the use of fake nails.  I don't like spending the money on acrylics or silk, besides the fact that if I try to scratch with them I bruise, and the nails always chip after a week.  I have a file with me at all times, but I'm not really off to a good start.  I'm thinking of trying the bitter apple I bought to keep the dogs from chewing.  Hopefully I won't like the stuff as much as the rat terrior does.  I don't want long nails, just not stubs that look so awful.

I've never heard of glass nail files.  ???  At a professional convention a couple of years ago I was introduced to "Anew Natural Nail System".  Whatever special technique the salesman did seemed to seal a split on my thumbnail and the seal lasted for a couple of weeks. (I haven't been able to duplicate that level of success)
It does seem to help me keep decent looking nails, although I'll never have long nails (and don't really want them 'cuz I wouldn't be too kind to them any way).  The file they use is called a "goldstone".  It is very, very fine, probably like the glass files.

This is how long my thumbnail usually is. my nails grow long and strong, but sometimes I'll lapse on vitamin intake and get a pretty clean break (it'll break off EXACTLY at the curve of the protruding portion, making it look like I cut my nail off the normal way) The rest of the nails.. I'm a long nail fan!  8)  I took after my mother for hard nails, mind you this only occured once I reached 30  :( after that I have to cut them once a month or I find I cannot stir a pot or do up buttons. At my old job my boss would use me as a nail model whenever they wanted to sell some new nail product.  She wanted me to tell the customers I was using "brandX" to get my nails long.  I said oh sure...and then told my customers how I really did it.  I told them to frist keep a nail file and clipper with you just incase you get a break or snag.  The you can cut or smooth it to prevent nail biting.  Never use metal files and if you use polish to go bare for a few days inbetween to let the nails breath. Rub nails and cuticles with Vitamin E oil twice a day. Stay clear of fakes, they ruin your nailbed and I have seen some horrid infection and fungus resulting from keeping them on too long :P  When doing house work use gloves and do not forget to use a good hand creme.

My nails are about a 1/4 inch right now, I cut them last week as they grow like weeds!  Now if only my hair grew that fast!  ;D
