Title: Exercise and long hair Post by BrunnetteTexan on Jan 14th, 2005 at 12:17am
I have heard that putting your hair in ponytail while doing vigorous exercise can cause damage to the ends while they swing around. Is there any truth to this? I have been putting my hair up with an hairstick for karate class.

maybe when you have hair past waistlength it could ... i mean, the longer the ponytail the more it can "whip around".

I think the type of hair you have would most determine if damage could occur. Thin, brittle, dry, prone to breakage, ends will probably suffer if put in a ponytail to swing and whip around during excercise. But healthy, strong ends could probably withstand the movement.
If you hair does not tangle when put into a pony tail, then I don't think you need to worry too much 0 but do keep an eye on the ends and check for damage. |

Thanks! It sounded a little odd to me but I thought I would put it out there to see what people thought.

If you put your hair in a ponytail and then braided it, the ends couldn't whip around and tangle, which is how the damage occurs I think.
I don't know if you have this problem, but my hair (waist length) is so long that when I play basketball, my braid whips around and gets in my field of vision, really messing me up! So I do one or two braids, french if I have time, and double them up with a scrunchie. This might work for you because there's no way the hair can tangle or get damaged. |

My hair is waist-length and the only way to confine my hair when exercising hard is a snood, otherwise it would tangle and/or come out.

Hey Hippychik! Glad to see ya around again! How do you attach your snood so that it does not come off? Is it a headband style or a low bun style snood? |

I wear my (one inch from waistlength!!!) hair in a bun at the nape of my neck when I'm participating in vigorous excersize. Usually a scrunchie is all it takes to hold it in place, but sometimes I use little clips to keep my flyaways in check.

I had my hair in a high bun today and forgot to take it out before I hit the gym. Surprisingly it was a very comfy pillow to lean against while I was working on the machines.

Hey Bikerbraid!
My snood is a full snood (not just a bun cover) with an elastic band. I wear it with the band down to the forehead instead of the band back at the ears, which doesn't look great, but reduces bounce substantially. |

I put my hair up in a very high and tight bun when I work out. Even if it yanks at my scalp a bit, it's better than having it get caught in one of the machines... :o

Lady Veruca, I read your post about having hair down to your calves!! :o That's the longest on this board! We'd love to see you introduce yourself in the "New Member Introductions" board so you can tell us all about how you got to calf length.
Hugs, Anais |
