With people from around the world visiting us here, I was curious what traditions are followed for New Years.  What do you all do for New Years Eve/New Years day?

I usually don't do anything with New Years (aside from make resolutions I never end up keeping! LOL), but I know that one of the oldest New Years traditions in Dublin is the gathering outside Christchurch Cathedral to hear the bells ring in the new year. Traditionally, a peal of 16 - 19 ring out at midnight.

Then on the 1st is the Lord Mayors New Years Day Parade. Pretty similar to most other places, I reckon.

Bangladeshis are predominantly Muslim, so they follow the Muslim lunar calendar, with their new year being around March. There are parties on the 31st of December, but there are no country traditions. However, we do have a family tradition  :). Every year, our entire family eats on our 5th floor (the party floor) and then we go to the roof. We have fireworks every year, and last year we burned a man made of old clothes. At 12.00, we wish all of our family a happy new year  :). On this night, none of the children (much to the disappointment of my brothers) are allowed to go to any other parties, and we spend the evening with our family. After 12, everyone sits around on the roof wrapped in shawls (it doesn't snow here but it does get quite cold) sipping tea/coffee and chatting. I usually sleep soon after midnight.  :)

My new year's traditions are pretty simple. Just a gathering of friends, we talk or play video games or watch movies while waiting for midnight(which is where our tradition comes in). Every year we start things off anew by breaking raw eggs, in our hands, under a car, through a basketball hoop, whatever we find amusing. For the record, we are not not drunk while we do this, it's just something fun and different.

The past year has been, less than perfect for me. So here's hoping that this year will be a good one, for not only myself but all of you as well.

My family has always eaten black eyed peas on new year's day and claim that it will bring prosperity if you leave a little on your plate.

It hasn't done anything for my finances yet, but I like peas and have a little trouble leaving a few.  LOL

I've loved reading about all the traditions that others have written about before me.  They sound so nice.

Our tradition is to have a couple friends over, get drunk, watch movies and play board games.

This year we even made it to midnight.  

I've been a night shift (10:30 pm - 7:00 am) nurse for the past 21 years - so my "tradition" has been working every new year's eve and new year's day for the past 21 years.... not terribly fun - but I love waking up each elderly resident in the morning with a cheerful , "Happy New Year!!!"

Our family has never been much for celebrating, (the rest are NOT night folk - ha ha) - so I always volunteer to work so others can have their fun  :D

We're not to much on celebrating New Years, I always find it kind of a sad time. Just stayed home and watched TV and today will go over and have dinner at my father's.
