I've decided to go to hair stylist in December. I need a hot oil treatment, and at least some trimming. I can trust my stylist- she loves to cut and dye, but she can also do exactly as I tell her. :)

So, what should I tell her? I assume that my split end problem is under control by the time, so the minimum trim would be about 1 cm -less than half an inch.
On the other hand, before this fall I treated my hair badly and lost it. Now I've noticed new growth and I would really like to give it a chance. I want my hair to be not only long, but also as thick as it would be if I hadn't been ignorant in the beginning.

I've already decided, that once I reach BSL, I will keep that length for a while to gain thickness, but should I also cut now more than the bare minimum. I think that cutting some 4 cm would improve things, and my hair would still be shoulder-length.

Am I being smart or having some cutting obsession attack?

It's smart to think about this seriously before you do it.

I recommend that people (men and women) who are intending to grow their hair long should get no more than 1/2" taken off at a time, based at least partly on my own experience of feeling naked after a 1-1/2" trim. If you get your 1/2" trim, and you like it and still want more, go back each month or two til you get it out of your system.

If you're trying to eventually get your hair all one length, the most important thing you can get through to your stylist is not to cut the shortest top layers, to do her magic on the lower levels.

If you cut the short parts, even if it currently seems they'd look better a bit shorter or shaped a bit, it will add mucho time to the interminable growing out process.

My feeling is that even if you have splits, it's not necessary to cut away damage immediately unless it's causing more damage by tangling up virgin hair into tight knots.

I agree with eKatherine.  If your long term goal is long hair, then you need to limit the trims or else you are trimming off everything you are working towards.

Try to do just a 1/2" trim - you might be amazed at how your hair looks and feels afterwards.

Wow, I guess I'm struggling with my first cutting obsession attack  ::) I'm going to see my stylist this week. The split end problem has improved with daily trimming sessions, but is still not entirely under control, so I'll ask her opinion but will try go with minimal trimming.
