Can hair sticks be used on fine hair?  How do you use them?

I, too have baby fine hair that's quite slippery when up - I have worn hair sticks every day for almost a year - since I bought my first pair from Susan's site.  I'd never had sticks before, nor had I ever tried them at all, Since then, I haven't bought any -  other than those found here in her boutique...

My favorite part of wearing these beautiful ornaments - besides the obvious - THEY'RE GORGEOUS!!! -
Is my hair has so much less damage when it's up all day every day... it's getting an opportunity to relax, and grow!  Very few split ends, fewer hairs "jumping ship" . Less frequent brushing, less exposure to the elements, And you just feel better and prettier when you're wearing them.  

Susan's sticks have actually become part of my "identity" -  friends, co-workers, and patients have all started looking at them each day to see which pair I'm wearing - and they always recognize a new pair...(confession time.... I a long locks hair stick addict.  really.  Susan.... back me up here....)

I think when you get your first pair you'll feel the tiniest bit awkward - and your hair might not stay up perfectly, or completely flawlessly - but with practice - in less than 2 weeks you'll be whipping it up like a pro - and demonstrating to total strangers in the grocery store the ease in which you style your hair each day (trust me on that one ... or am I the only one that happens to?)

I've found that when my tailbone length hair is dry, or nearly dry I can go from "bed head" to out the door with a 'flawless' style in less than 10 minutes - sometimes less than 5.

You've got to try them - They are fantastic!

Hi Lisa, welcome!  You can get some great pointers by looking thru the Hairstyles gallery and also by looking thru some of the older posts, I found the 'prom styles' and 'keep it casual' most helpful to me.  I also have fine hair and am fairly new at using hairstix, these are the two most successful methods for me, my hair is mid-length, to about the bottom of my bra strap, I'm not sure how long your hair is, but here we go!:
1) Gather hair at the nape of your neck like you're making a pony tale, and twist into a fairly secure bun (not too tight, and not too loose, it will take a few tries).  Take a hairstick and put it up through the middle of the bun, going up through the bottom underside, and now here's the tricky part, invert the hairstick (this will now flip the bun upside down) so the pointed end will be coming back down again, and go through the bun to secure it.  One stick is enough to hold my hair, but I put the 2nd in just for deco usually.  You will have to practice withe the tension that feels most comfortable to you.  Hope it's not too confusing w/o seeing pictures to follow!

2)  Gather hair at middle-back of head and hold like you're making a pony tale, hold this with left hand (I am right handed).  With right hand, place a stick directly above pony tale against your head, pointed end to the left, now take hair you are holding in left hand and make two wraps up and around the stick (this is depending on your hair length, you can wrap more or less) and invert the stick so the pointed end is now going down thru your hair against your head. Once secured, you can poke the 2nd stick in, I try to kind of "sew" it, or weave it in and out while pushing it down, this holds it better.  In this style, the sticks are slanted from left to right, it looks neat!  Hope you are able to follow these, one day I'll learn how to put pictures up to follow!

Thank you so much for the instructions.  I see hair sticks sold in different lengths.  I would think I would want the shorter ones?  My hair is only a little past the shoulders right now.  And very fine and not very thick.

The sticks I am currently using are 7 3/4" long, I prefer them longer than shorter, because with fine hair you will alway have "slippage" (how's that for a word?!) in most up-do styles, and the extra length of stick helps to keep some more of the hair in as it wants to slide away!  I picked my sticks up at a dollar store just out of curiosity, I didn't even know how to use them, I just thought they looked neat.  Then I started looking up how to use hair sticks on the net, and that's how I found this site-haven't looked back since! :P  They are just cheap plastic sticks, but now that I'm learning to use them I would like to get a real nice pair from Susan, she has made some breath taking hair jewelry, I would be proud to own a pair (and I think that I deserve them!).  Good luck, and I'll keep you posted with any new ideas!
