I've been wearing my hair in a bun lately - it's quick and stays put all day.

Lo and behold - I am now an "old lady" according to my some people.  "Only old ladies wear their hair like that...."

Has anybody else gotten this sort of "fashion advice" ?

I'm sure he's sincere but delusional.

"Old ladies" nowadays seem to wear their hair in cookie-cutter short cuts. Only the coolest older women - the few, the proud -  wear their hair in buns.;D

He's just jealous.  ::)

My BF does not like me to wear my hair in a bun or even up. ::)  I think it puts him in mind of those old ladies in cartoons with their hair held up in a bun with knitting needles or something.  ??? He always wants me to wear my hair hanging down but geesh, sometimes I like to have a more dressed up or business type appearance.  :P

I really think there is nothing more elegant than having upswept hair, some guys just don't know what is classy.  ;)

Old ladies have their hair blue-rinsed, cut short and permed or crimped into finger waves.

Ladies with chignons or French twists look poised and elegant, no matter their age!

I used to think I'd like to do the blue (or lavender) rinse when my hair got white, but that was long ago, when I was a child and older women did that sort of thing. I haven't seen a blue rinse in years. Plus, my hair didn't turn white.

Around here older women have two basic styles - the *permed/colored/cropped high-maintenance stylish older woman* look, and the *fried/cropped don't care/I thought short hair was supposed to be easy I'll be damned if I put any more effort into this mess* look.

YMMV, I think the bedhead look looks absurd on women over the age of 25. I work with several women who clearly have put lots of effort and money into this, and they just look careless and disheveled.

I don't consider a bun to be "old lady" hair at all! Everyone in Dublin Airport wears their hair in a bun. In fact, some airlines out here require you to. (Aer Lingus is one of them that requires you to wear your hair up at all times, preferably in a bun if possible.)

The airline I work for doesn't require it, but I prefer the look of it. It's very neat, clean and professional. (The only time I slightly cringed at the thought of wearin a bun was when this older American passenger said to me that he loved my hair up in a bun. "You remind me of my mother when I was a boy with your hair up in a bun like that." I thanked him but I wasn't sure whether to be enlightened or annoyed at the idea of reminding someone of their mother. LOL)

When I think of old lady hair, I think of all the things ye have already discussed. The blue rinses, and the short poodle perms.  I will rebel agains that when I'm old! I want white long hair like the lady the X-men comics. Storm I think...

I nearly always wear a bun, and since my hair to a ponytail length, I have worn it down only twice. Bun is so much more comfortable, carefree during the day and can be decorated with pretty things. Besides, I think that (at least on me) hair down looks girlish. I'm a large and no-nonsense person -antithesis to girlish, so bun is also most "emotionally comfortable" way of wearing my hair.

And I don't apparently have to change my hairstyle a bit when I grow old.  ;D

My spouse...oh he would like me to wear my hair down. He suggested it once. I tried it for an hour (that's the first time I wore my hair down) and then told him, that I can have a long hair in a bun, or no hair. As he knows that I'm quite capable of shaving all my hair (or was before I discovered all the nice things one can do with her hair), he has developed liking to my buns. And to my hairsticks too.  ;D

i think my bf finds especially french twists very dated. i do think though you can make less formal variations with very long hair but well, i just never managed to do them anyhow  ::)

the only thing i find just too weird and old fashioned to wear are crown braids (luckily cuze i don't think i could ever do that anyhow). that hairstyle just doesn't fit with any clothing that is even just remotely modern.

I'm afraid I share a different view on crown braids. I think they are gorgeous. (Although probably not always practical.) I reckon they look lovely with dresses when worn and carried on the right head.

Then again, I'm one of those people that was born in the wrong era. Send me back to a medieval time anyday! (Minus the plagues and shorter lifespan, of course. I just wanna be there to wear the fab clothes and see all that lovely long hair!) :D

Me too.  Nothing is better than a dress that makes my bosoms larger to even out w/ my hips and long flowing hair!

My wedding dress was medieval. It was great gettin to wear that all day! My little moment in time...lol ;D

oh but i have nothing against old styles ... but with such a neat dress i'd still prefer to have my hair loose! i think i just don't have a head for crown braids really.

I think crown braids can look really hip and funky as well. I have a friend who wears her hair in crown braids and similar complicated-braid styles, always with young, sporty clothes. It looks spunky!  8)

im only 22 , i am currently wearing my hair in an updo every single day a.k.a. fun bun. its just out of my way and sooooooooooooooooo much neater. i think ppl used to think i looked crazy before. oh well who cares what they think.

well, one of my best memories is going over to my grandmother's house where my mother would then go through the process of 'letting down granna's hair'. By the time she had taken down the bun consisting of 4 long white braids it hung clear to the floor when she was sitting in her chair.

Then they would go to the sink and my mother would gently wash it being careful to try to not tangle the solid white mane.

She could not do her hair by herself. In fact I grew up feeling that hair doing was part of a collective process between family members and freinds... especially when it is very long and hard to even wash alone.

then my mother would gently finger comb it to lay down both her front and back and that is when the baking began! Baking of course helped make the kitchen warm and it would take several hours for her hair to air dry. You could not style it wet because 'it would start to rot on her head'

helping braid that hair was wonderful and when she passed away it was part of my exchange with her that I really missed... it seemed to be so much of 'who she was'... the little old round lady with the big bun.

What wonderful memories!  I like the idea of the collective group caring for the hair.  I wish we could return to those types of moments.

Thanks for sharing, it brought back memories of my grandmother's classic length hair that I seldom saw down.
