Title: Hair trimming Post by AnnaT on Sep 23rd, 2004 at 7:15pm
I'm going in for a trim. I've asked the stylist before to take 1" off the very bottom and 0.5" off each of the layers. The idea being that the layers will still be looking healthy as they grow out - and who knows they may eventually catch up with the rest of the length.
Now I'm wondering - the layers seem to make my hair look scraggly. Would they be less noticeable if I ask for a "blunt cut" on each of the layers ? Has anybody tried this and what are your thoughts ? |

::sigh:: Growing out layers is sooooo difficult.
If you plan to grow your hair longer than BSL, you most likely will want to eliminate the layers. When and how you do that is what you have to decide. Since you say your layers are healthy, I'd suggest just trimming from the bottom so that the shorter layers can eventually catch up. This allows you to keep your length without a drastic cut. Good luck with your growing goals. |

Thank you BikerBraid !
I am kicking myself over ever having layers cut into my hair. |

Just ignore your stylist! I hate the way stylists always want to do what THEY want to do when you go in for a trim. I dunno how many times I've gone in with the intention of just havin a wee trim, and come out with half of my hair gone. I have gotten the "boring old trims" speech before too.
"Why don't you let me do your hair today? We'll give you a nice pixie cut." Umm....NO!!!!! I'm paying you to TRIM my hair, not chainsaw it off!! Anyway, I digress.... I have recently been in the same predicament as you with the layers. Because of the type of hair I have, when it hits just about shoulder length, I look like I have triangular hair. (My hair is fine too....go figure!) I chose to keep the layers because it kept the triangle under control, and they were healthy. It honestly kept me from hacking it all off at certain stages. I continued trimming the ends and dusting the layers. In no time, the layers have neally completely caught up with the rest of my hair. I know it's different for everyone, but I'm just here to say that it worked for me, and I didn't have to sacrifice all the length I did have to achieve it! |

One time I went into a salon with BSL length hair and
came out with a layered, above the shoulder cut. It was NOT what I wanted. But your hair was so damaged! The stylist said. Well it WAS damaged but I still didn't want that much cut off. And she said, all one length doesn't suit you so I cut in layers. ARRRGG! Luckily, that was about 20 years ago and I'm more assertive now so I tell them exactly what I want. I think stylists are more willing to work with you, too, these days.(they still tell me I need to have layers but I don't listen) |

I know where you are comin from, Babyfine. I don't understand why stylists say that about the layers. I'm know they really suit a lot of people, but I don't personally think that they are always the way to go for fine haired folk.
To me, it just made my hair feel even MORE thin than it already is when they would do the razoring. AAKK!! I HATE IT WHEN STYLISTS USE RAZORS TO "TEXTURIZE"! |

Oh, I've never had a razor cut! That seems to be the
trend now, doesn't it. My hair would look even wispier and finer than it already does now! I grew out all my layer to one length and fortunatly the stylist I have now respects what I want. Its all one length with growing out bangs(fringe). Yes I agree with fine hair it looks much thicker that way. |

It was an age since I last let a razor touch my hair. It seemed that about 5 years ago, that was the first thing a stylist would reach for when trimming my hair and I'd have my hands up screaming, "Noooooooo!!!!" (Ok, maybe not that dramatic, but you get the picture!)
They clamied that it helped add texture to my "fine, lifeless hair". Gee, thanks. LOL |
