Title: Protein Conditioners-Who needs 'em? Post by strawberryfine on Sep 19th, 2004 at 11:47pm
Hi All,
Just wondering- if protein conditioners can cause brittleness if overused, would it be better not to use them at all and just use moisture/oils? I know they are said to strengthen the hair, but couldn't you conceivably get all the necessary protein in your diet/vitamins? Does applying protein externally to the hair really increase its strength? Do you/don't you use a protein conditioner and what do you think? TIA, strawberryfine |

Cheese scrambled eggs and bacon are waaaaay better than my Finesse! Which is why... ::dunn dunn dunnnnnn:: I quit using it! (also reacted badly with my oils. Cones and oils go nicely together, but protein and oils don't for me.)
Finesse contains some sort of silk protein. I noticed more softness but it could have been from the high amount of gentle conditioners in the shampoo itself. The protein results were nice, but then again, the conditioner rather than the shampoo has more of an effect on hair texture. The more gunk I use, the muddier the effects of all, and the harder it is to monitor results. |

Hi Strawberryfine,
Your dead hair strands cannot absorb protein, I'm afraid. Any positive effects are due to a kind of coating the protein (or more probably, silicone in the product) puts on the hair shaft. I know some people like protein products, but they can cause brittleness if overused. Just make sure to clarify e.g. with vinegar and you can use them to your heart's content! Eat quiche instead! /Kate |
