i know i cant be the only one who *occasionally* does stuff that would make my hair cry...so i was wondering what everyones hair sins are?
i think i'll confess the worst one: sometimes when im tired or stressed i just rip the comb through my hair (gasp) i hear a lot of snaps and come away with quite a few hairs......but it doesnt stop me when im in a rush! ahhhhh!! :-X c'mon people...tell all to your auntie bunny! |

You mean, like, aside from the permanent hair color issue? ::)

Combing out my hair when it is wet because I'm in a hurry. :-X

Sometimes when I find a hair I don't like, I pull it out. Sometimes I garden under the hot sun without a hat. Um... I wear it loose almost every day. and sleep with it in just a side ponytail...
Then again, my hair is the heavy-duty wash-and-wear type compared to most board members here I think... It seems that more folks here have fine hair than coarse. Leia, would you say you have heavy-duty hair too? Anais |

It's gone through bleach & permanent hair dye. Last year, it was teased a lot for halloween. Recently though, not even combing/brushing it, before or after showers. Still shampoo (i've tried COing, but it leaves my hair greasy. i think i'm doing something wrong, but what?) It had little to none sun protection through the summer. Curl with with heated plastic rollers occasionaly. I'm so horrible with hair care, but it stay healthy :-/ I swear I'm changing my ways! (though i'll admit, old habits die hard :P)

Ooh, I wish! My hair isn't fine or coarse - it's just in between. After one blow dry my hair becomes split-city ;). It tends to be dry (like my skin), so I have to really take care of it to make sure it stays shiny and healthy. Of course, after about half an hour when I leave it down, the length gets all frizzy :-/. The rest of my family have heavy-duty hair, though. Mum blow dries and dyes and has the most PERFECT hair I've ever seen! |

I'm working on a CO project to classify successful and unsuccessful CO products. Exactly what product did you use that left your hair greasy? Which brand and specific product name? Products I have found that work are

Hmm...I've tried White Rain Energizing Citrus, and it left me feeling horribly greasy. It's so cheap, though... ::) Maybe I'll try the Extra Body next time I buy more. As for haircare sins...I've snapped more than my fair share of strands with quick combing as well. For some reason I also keep trying to use olive oil on my scalp for different experimental treatments, and it always just leaves me greasy. I keep using it though...I have horrible memory. ::) |

Put your olive oil in your kitchen cupboard and use it for cooking. Coconut oil is much better for your hair, not so icky-sticky.

That's a wonderful idea! :D I believe the one with greasy residue was Herbal Essences Rainforest Refreshing Conditioner. I found most Herbal Essences products work wonderful (yes, i do have the urge to herbal), just the Rainforest products. And Suave Naturals with raspberry & vitamin e extracts works well too. :) |

I love olive oil! I keep a special tub in my bathroom for my hair. It works really well on my dry scalp too. :) |

If you have good luck with it... Too many people have difficulty washing it out or find it makes their ends crunchy for me to generally recommend it. How would you suggest that Cairn wash it out of her hair without using harsh shampoo? |
Title: Re: hair sins Post by leia on Aug 25th, 2004 at 2:38pm
Hmm.. I use Timotei, which is mild.. Lush shampoos work well, herbs work well, and I am recently in love with Body Shop Honey Moisturizing Shampoo. :)

So far the VO5 kiwi lime has worked well for me.
I've been using it about three weeks and haven't noticed any irritation. |

Let's see, hair sins...
Permanent dye(making the front part reddish brown) on front, blue semi permanent on top of it, more bleach to try and get the semi permanent dye off, making it turn from dark blue, to light green(which I like) using a fine tooth comb to detangle hair before and after showers(when wet) combing/brushing hair about a million times per hour, snagging at tangles and hearing snaps. attempting to blowdry and use a curling iron to straighten hair, um, that's about it for now lol. It's not as bad as you think. my hair is REALLY resistant to damage. And I just recently had to get a haircut (it's about 2 in. now) since my school doesn't allow guys to have long hair. It wasn't that long, but they think 7-9 inches is super long for guys, pfft. but I guess having thick, wavy/curly hair, that has a TON of volume makes it seem longer........ I hope all that doesn't give you nightmares :P ;D ;D |

Still using my old favorite metal barrettes and clips
on occasion (cringe) and combing too fast snapping hairs (occasionally) aside from the fact my hair has permanent color in it(growing out). |

Leia, I LOVE that Body Shop stuff! I just bought a bottle of the honey conditioner the other day, it smells absolutely divine and works great for CO (take note, eKatherine).
My worst hair sin is propping my sunglasses on top of my head. It almost always tears out a hair or two (I've only done it 3-4 times this summer though, I'm improving). I never wear a hat either, because I want the sun to lighten my hair. And I tug my hair when I French braid or put it in pigtails. Otherwise I'm a good girl. :-) /Kate |

Ooh, the glasses thing.. I always get hair caught in the hinges of my glasses. They tear out strands from my bangs.. ALL the time.

Hair sins...Well,for me it's definitely brushing my hair while it's still wet! I don't think it really damages my hair, but I have read numerous times that this is a not a good idea for long hair :(
Flaming_Bunny, I just saw the pics in your journal and I have to say that your hairsticks & Figure eight bun are gorgeous! :D |

In the wintertime, it would get below freezing over here. I used to shower in the morning and not dry my hair first before going outside. By the time I got to the car, the hair would have frozen into icicles. Some of it was hard enough to snap off. Then I'd thaw in the car.

Oh dear, I do that too. How damaging is it? /Kate |
Title: Re: hair sins Post by bikerbraid on Aug 30th, 2004 at 10:55am
I used to allow my hair to freeze in the cold, but that was when it was very short and I was swimming every day (back in the olden days for me).
Allowing wet hair to freeze can be very damaging. If the moisture in the hair shaft freezes, it will expand and cause breakage or split ends. When you must go out in the cold with wet hair, cover your hair/head with a nice scarf. This will hold your body heat and keep your hair from freezing. (And maybe prevent a cold or two!). Just heard that the Farmer's Almanac predicts some severe cold and blizzards for my area for this winter. Guess I'd better make sure I have my favorite hood/scarf ready! |

Oooh, that's a mortal hair sin for me then! I'll quit starting this winter. and Kate, I never would have guessed that someone else has been doing the same thing....!

I like to take morning swims during the autumn and winter, and I usually just walk home with wet hair (in the Swedish winter, yes it's cold). I'll be buying a hat this year!

Oh oh, I do that sometimes, too, go out in the cold
winter mornings with a wet head. Guess I'll get a nice hat for this year. I always warm my car up a long time first and then jump in and by the time I get to my destination my hair is mostly dry from the heater. Never had any hair break off yet. |
