Title: SQUEEE!! I did it!! Post by Kaylin on Jul 22nd, 2004 at 9:04pm
Thanks so much, Space_Cadet, for those braiding links! I go so psyched at doing them, I HAD to try and do one on myself. I had to learn how to dutch braid first, but once I got it, I was able to do my own variation on the Dutch Classic.
I added the ribbon, and for a first attempt, considering I can't really see and doing this on myself with no help, I think I did a fairly decent job. Granted, I could start a little more to the side in the fron perhaps, and get those braids a little tighter. Not much I can do about the Frizzies though, unless someone has a suggestion? Just HAD to share! ~Kaylin |

Kaylin, that looks beautiful! I've tried doing a Dutch braid, but always fail miserably...how did you do this?

With alot of frustration at the beginning, but I find it helps keeping your hands close to your head while looking in the mirror.
If you follow the directions from the sight, just reverse the hands: So when they say move your right hand, in the mirror, it'll be your left. :) Alot of patience goes along way too. I had to take a rbeak from it. The time I actually got it, was my fourth try. The first three were me getting used to the hand positions. :) ~Kaylin |

Thanks BikerBraid!
It's getting easier and easier each time I do it. I guess my hands are starting to learn a bit better how to grip the hair a bit tighter. I took out the one in the picture, and re-did it so I could show my fiance. It turned out much better and was a bit tighter. Still have a bit of fly away strands though, much to my chagrin. >:( Other than that, I have a photoshoot on Friday, and will have this hair style, plus a few temporary extensions in. I will be sure to post photos here again. :) ~Kaylin |

Nope, not a first attempt.
It was the fourth time I tried, and it was done after I decided I was going to go for a shower. I was standing in front of the mirror, waiting for my V05 Hot Protein pack to warm up, brushing my hair, and I figured to try again. It actually worked, so I tried doing the other side and got it as well. Seems to be getting easier now each time I do it. Now if I can just get rid of the frizzies, I'll be a happy camper. :) ~Kaylin |

Thanks Leia. :)
The Gown I made myself actually, using Simplicity pattern 9891 with a few modifications. The Outer dress is flocked taffeta and the under dress is satin back crepe. The was the first dress I had ever sewn in a non-home economics class type of way, and the last time I was in Home Ec, was close to 15 years ago. *LOL* Not so sure I'm happy with the bell sleves though. I might re-do this pattern and alter the sleeves a bit, maybe with the sleeve pattern from Simplicity 9929. :) Anyways... The hair also were partial extensions as well, that could be taken out at the end of the way. I had a bunch of toyokalon grade loose hair and hot glue gunned it to a Goody comb in two sizes. They started to pop out though near the end of the shoot. ~Kaylin |

You MADE that?? :o I'm incredibly impressed. You should keep the bell sleeves, they're reaaly pretty.

Oooo Kaylin, don't you look elegant! :o
You look as though an incredibly sexy, powerful and somewhat evil warlock is standing just behind your right shoulder, and you are acknowledging his presence but certainly not condescending to turn around. Heehee! /Kate |

You did a *beautiful* job and I love the sleeves. I'm especially nuts about the fabric, it's absolutely luscious! I think your hairstyle matches the outfit perfectly.
I miss sewing, I used to do a lot of it (I used to deisgn and make a lot of my clothes when I was a teenager but I got more into impressionist and watercolor quilting in my later years). But hey, with all these hairsticks to make, who has time? I don't even have a working sewing machine anymore and don't have the time to dedicate to sewing to justify the extreme expense of buying a good quality new one. I'd also *love* to get into machine knitting, but I want one of those machines that allow you to design on the 'puter and then just have it knit your pattern for you ;) |

Thanks so much guys. :)
I find it rather funny that I posted pictures with the intent of discussing the hair, and I'm getting more compliments on the dress! *LOL* I have made other things as well, which can be found on my costuming page: http://www.geocities.com/highlandmedic/costumes.htm I plan on making another dress in the near future, one that is longer in length, from the new Simplicity pattern inspired by the Lord of the Rings stuff. I enjoy costuming alot actually, just something about sewing together a pattern is just not as satisfying as naything else, espcially when you have a great fabric to work with, like triple woven rayon velvet *drools*. My sewing machine is technically older than I am. I belonged to my Mom, but she gave it to me when I started this costuming craze of mine. I get more use out of it then she does, and it was just sitting in her basement. :) Anyways, glad you guys really like everything. Now, if I can just get my hair to grow... :) ~Kaylin |

mmm, I wish I had the time to get into sewing. I guess that's why I got into cross-stitching instead - it's faster and fairly simple, but with just as much satisfaction and room for individual creativity. :)

Every time I see this thread, all I can think of is - "SQEEEE!" - isn't that the sound that your rabbit makes when you hug it?

You should, it's quite fun. Also an inexpensive resource for homemade Christmas gifts. ;) I only just started a month ago and am still working on my first project, but it's coming along nicely. |

Kaylin;
Your hair is perfect with the dress. You did a beautiful job on the dress. I used to make all my clothes - Jr High through college and continued to sew clothing for my family until it was no longer economical. Now my machine is used for odd things like sewing bike seat covers, bike covers, parade flags, repairing tents, etc. |
