Title: jojoba and... straw!
Post by Anais Satin on May 20th, 2004 at 6:43pm
Hey Noelkara

I notice you mentioned somewhere that jojoba oil makes your hair feel like straw. So I'm not alone!! I get the same reaction. At first, I got on the messageboard and others suggested it might be overconditioning... but now I am beginning to think it might just be the nature of my hair. What's yours like?

My hair is really fine and I have at one of it, and for some reason the jojoba oil does make it a little straw like. It's actually really fine if I put a little on before I wash, and it comes out soft, but otherwise it's too much I think. I found John Frieda's Blond hair repair deep conditioner and I was skeptical at first but WOW! It is probably the best thing I've tried.

My hair is fine too,and jojoba makes it feel like straw also :P
I have no idea why, as it seems to be working for so many other people-but I've had the same experience with olive/coconut oil.
I've just discovered a new leave-in conditioner-KMS Turnstyle revival cream-and it works great so far(I've only used it for a few days now).
It does contain quite a bit of silicone though!

when i first tried jojoba oil i applied it after my hair had dried and my hair was very dry at the ends (my hairs fine too)...but for a change i applied it when my hair was still wet/damp and now it is super soft! its yummy! wash your hair, towel dry THEN apply.....it works wonders!

That's odd because I have such coarse hair compared to you folks... maybe it has to do with how absorbent my hair is... but anyhoo today's my shampoo day so I'll try either oiling before, or after while still wet, and see what happens. Thanks!

Sometimes the oil will "react" to protein treatments that you may have done and cause the hair to be "crunchy" or "gooey".  You might try oiling after doing a vinegar rinse to see if that makes a difference.

Hey Folks

I did a vinegar rinse yesterday and oiled wet.... my hair feels terriffic! It still got straw-like when I oiled dry, but the wet oiling worked great.
Has anyone had the same straw-hair reaction with coconut oil-76? I'm trying it this weekend...

I use Parachute brand coconut oil on my hair, several drops a day rubbed onto my hands and run through the length of it. I searched on the brand and found lots of reviews written by Indians who prefer it for oiling their hair. Once I did oil my hair heavily overnight, and I liked how it felt after shampooing. I intend to try a heat cap, but I haven't had the time to do this yet, so I can't say whether it'll work out much better.

Coconut oil is extremely heat-stable, as is jojoba. I wouldn't use any oil that required refrigeration on my hair, as it might turn rancid and form a dry coating.

Hey folks
Dry-oiling with jojoba isn't for me but the wet-oiling is wonderful! I love this new routine!
Can oiling replace silicones completely?

I am anxious to try oiling my hair.  I have never done it!  Where do you buy the oil?  I don't recall ever seeing it.
BTW, a product i am addicted to is called Ban de terre (something like that) it is the coolest serum.  it is very expensive but well worth it.  It is a leave in treatment and styling product.  it works even better for me than frizz ease to get out frizzies.  I am anxious to hear where i can get the coconut oil.  Thanks!

health food stores normally carry it.....anywhere that sells aromatherapy (sp?) oils should do pure jojoba and coconut oil too....can be a bit expensive, but it lasts FOREVER so its ok  :) hope you find some!

I found the opposite when I started using jojoba oil. My hair just didn't seem to absorb it. I put it on at night before I braid my hair but it still felt a little greasy in the morning and my hair separated into sections and clumps. I am barly using any jojoba oil on my hands when oiling. Is there any way of making it absorb more. It's hair wash day tomorrow so i'll try putting it on while wet, but I would appreciate any suggestions.

Put an ounce of water in a little spray bottle and add 1/8 teaspoon of jojoba. Shake well when misting, and do so often.

I actually never had a problem with oiliness. I think you're trying to apply way too much. If you put the right amount on, your hair will never get oily, just a few drops on the ends.

This sounds good, Bikerbraid.
I shampooed, vinegar rinsed, water rinsed, oiled lightly; then I conditioned to help with my tangles.

I'm a little crunchy but this is the best results I've had so far.  I'm guessing the oil is reacting with the protein in my Biolage Conditioning Balm.

So I'm guessing I can:
a) shampoo, vinegar rinse, water rinse, condition; let hair dry and try dry hair oiling.
or
b) Try to find something that will detangle to use in place of the Cond. Balm, but what?
or
c) Put an ounce of distilled water in a spray bottle, add 1/8 tsp oil and use this to mist on dry ends as needed.

Any suggestions?  Please... ???

TIA,
strawberryfine

I'd start with trying to oil the hair when dry.  If that doesn't work, then you might consider a different conditioner or use your conditioner as a leave-in and skip the oiling.

Okay, I have a question.  This weekend I tried to deep condition my hair with some olive oil, which I warmed a bit and applied to my entire head and left on for about an hour.  I think maybe the oil may have been a bit heavy for my hair, because I had to wash it three times before it would stop looking greasy.  Does anybody have any tips for this?  I want the oil to condition, just not leave me so greasy I have to try my hair out with shampoo just to get it out.

I've only used olive oil once and had the same experience.  I've never used it again.  I figure my hair is too fine for the heavier oil.

Bikerbraid,
Thanks for the advice.

I am going to try dry-oiling today with just a wee bit of jojoba oil.  It doesn't make sense that I couldn't use it.  I have some shampoo with jojoba 1% and it works great.  I've added jojoba to my conditioner and that worked very well.

Back to the dressing table...
