Title: hair color and heat
Post by Anais Satin on May 19th, 2004 at 6:41pm
Hey folks

I met someone who uses a straight-iron for her length and then a regular heat curler on her ends. Her natural hair color is a very dark Asian brown. The ends however are a medium mahogany, a very noticeable difference.
Her heat appliances are definitely frying her hair, as her splits show, but I was wondering more about her end color.

Heat appliances can "fry" hair and cause splits, but can they change hair color? I've seen some people with naturally-different colored ends, but Asian hair is usually all one color. Anybody know?

Thanks,
Anais

the different colour at the ends is most probably due to the sun over the years of having the hair. my ends are much blonder than my roots cos they've had about 10years worth of summers!

Lighter hair is very prone to lightening with exposure to the sun - my hair is an excellent example of that!  ::)

Asian hair usually is not as prone to sun damage, but it is possible.  Are you sure she had not chemically lightened it in the past?

Split ends will also give the appearance of lighter hair color if they have a lot of them.

That makes sense since it's only the last 1-2 inches...
She's never colored her hair in any way. How much difference lots of split ends can make! Anyhoo, Jules is my hair lab rat.. She loves her heat styling tools and refuses to go a day without them. I've given up talking to her about treating her hair right. Now I just observe and take lots of notes.
