Title: Do people tell you to cut it? Post by samantha on May 14th, 2004 at 3:02am
For the most part, I have a ton of compliments on my (below the bottom) hair. BUT- there are always a few who say, 'when are yo gonna get cut?" They seem to think that long hair is not fashionable- I think it is a classic and i love my long hair! Does anyone else experience this, it is rude!

Yep, it is rude. And yes, I've had people ask me when I am going to cut my hair. Unfortunately, there are many people who feel it is the right to tell others how to live their lives.
If you are happy with your hair, enjoy it! |

Yes,I can relate,I hear thar often.
Relatives are the worst, especially my *favourite* sister in law. >:( It's incredibly rude,I would never comment on any ones appearance, with the exception of giving a compliment. Sometimes I'm also tempted to give in and get a 'sporty' short cut-but then I think how much *I * enjoy my length, and the moment passes ;D |

I don't know why people do that. I guess it is either jealousy or simply because they don't like anything unusual. I get a ton of compliments from little girls! Isn't that cute? i bet you ladies do too.

I get many comments from children and men. Only a few from women. Jealousy could most certainly be a factor. 8)

i think most of the time it is because people don't like what is unusual. i'm what most would consider a "goth" and because i wear slightly eccentric clothing (none of that pvc, bondage stuff...im a velvet and lace kinda gal :) ) i get the RUDEST comments and quite frankly...abuse. they sometimes throw my hair into the mix..."errrrrr its HORRIBLE!....get a haircut!..." etc etc and so on. even though my hair is lovely (tooting my own horn ;D ::) ). i really dont understand society sometimes!!!

I actually think some people (probably just women) just think it's ugly. Like my sister...but she can never compliment me on anything. ::)
My stepsister actually complimented my on my updo today (thanks to leia for posting a link to instructions for her swirly bun!:)), which was a surprise. She said to my sister, "hey, doesn't her hair look cool?" Of course my sister didn't say anything. I don't know why it disgusts her so much. It's just hair; it's not like I'm walking around in my underwear or anything. But then, I don't have much to say about her trend-following fashion sense either, so I guess we're even. One of my friends used to have lovely, think blonde BSL hair, & recently cut it to above her shoulders. Even though it doesn't look nearly as lovely, I made still made a point to compliment her, because it did look cute with her round face. If I just got a cut I really liked, I wouldn't want people saying, "Omigosh, how horrible! I can't believe you cut it!" (not that I'd ever ever cut it...) It's just negative attention, and a lot of people seem to forget that it works both ways. |
Title: Re: Do people tell you to cut it? Post by samantha on Jun 7th, 2004 at 1:01am
You know it's funny that you say that because my mom likes to change her hair color a lot . No matter what, as soon as she changes it everyone says they "liked it better before." Yet "before" they never complimented her on it! I think all different hairstyles are nice, it just depends on the person. I don't know why people are so critical anyway. Some ladies have nice long hair and some have nice short hair. People should just respect one another's differences, you know? ;)

I usually don't get comments on cutting my hair because I live in a place where most women have long hair. A few days ago, though, I left my hair down and one of my best friends said it was looking so long and asked when I was going to cut it. I told him that I had been growing it purposely and that I cut it myself, but I don't think he understood the word "trim" as opposed to "cut." However, he did make it a point to say that it was looking lovely just the way it was ;).
When I leave my hair down I get a lot of compliments. Only a couple of times I've overheard girls saying "Leia is so out of fashion! She should get her hair cut!" That doesn't really leave an impression on me, though. I'm not usually a follower of fashion trends - I have my own style and my own hair. I do what suits ME, and most people appreciate that. Jealousy is a terrible thing, and I try not to let it affect me. Just know that your hair is beautiful and it is YOUR choice whether or not you keep it long! ;D |

I quite often have women tell me to cut my hair - never men. In fact, I had a man tell me that he respected me for never cutting my hair. I thought that was nice. My pet peeve is when I am told I should cut my hair and donate it to "Locks of love". People think it is a charity that gives wigs to children with cancer, but in fact, they sell the wigs and have a strange way of choosing those who get the wigs. I have also had people talk about my hair to someone else as if I couldn't hear them. LOL :P

I feel bad for all you that get dirty comments like that! I don't think I have ever had someone make a nasty comment about my hair! I actually use cutting my hair as a threat... and people take it that way! Even my Aunt who hates the way I dress has never insulted my hair. People always seem to *need* to play with it when I wear it down. My sister is the worst offender, but I kinda like having my hair braided. I'm almost 20 and have been dating my *first* boyfriend for almost 3 years and my sister already thinks she is making my wedding dress and doing my hair! I sometimes find it amusing that people fawn over my hair. It's not very long anymore. Well, I consider it short, for me anyway. Its about halfway down my back. I can't wait for it to be hip-length again. If someone tells you to cut your hair, tell them you cut it every day, but it just grows back over night. Some people may actually believe you. Pity them! LOL.

Although that may be true, but clearly not categorically true, not all women do things based on how men would like it. I think that would be just as silly as cutting it because someone suggested it to you.

*Alert:Very Sensitive Topic!*
I know you have all talked about people and relatives alike telling you to get your hair cut. This coming August I will be in high school and in September turning 14, my mom says I'm getting older (turning 14 is old now?) and perhaps I would look better with a midback or shoulder-length style (my face shape is best with long hair), my dad says my hair is beautiful but if I cut 4 or 5 more inches it would be easier, my sisters always ask when I'm going to cut it, and my friends either say I should give it locks of love or be fashionable and cut it. AAARRRRGGGHHHH! :o I can deal with my friends but my family tends to know how to hurt my feelings. How do I not let this bother me? |

They are jealous of your beautiful hair. That's all. It gives them feelings of inferiority.

Title: Re: Do people tell you to cut it? Post by flaming_bunny on Jul 17th, 2004 at 5:22pm
the best way to not let negative comments affect you is to just ignore them, i know its not easy but after a while you do grow a thicker skin....quicker than you realise. you have to learn to just laugh at the stupidity of the comments and stand your ground. its horrible when its your family but maybe they do keep on cos they see its affecting you, and they think you'll cave in and say "okay, cut it then". DONT GIVE UP!!! your long haired brothers and sisters are here to comfort you and spur you on ((((****HUG****)))) your skin will get thicker and the comments will eventually just roll off....trust me.....ive had to learn to do the same thing...but not about hair, i dress in a non-conventional way so i get insults from family and complete strangers. although my parents dont comment anymore cos i didnt give in and stood my ground.
your hair is beautiful...and its YOURS. remember that...and good luck :-* |

How do you handle yourself when people want to constantly touch your hair, especially total strangers? I try to be gracious, but I have to confess I find it very annoying. You would never see someone reach up and touch a stranger's short hair!

Title: Re: Do people tell you to cut it? Post by bikerbraid on Jul 19th, 2004 at 1:34am
Drummergirl - it is always difficult when the ones you love try to control in ways that are uncomfortable for you. I'd suggest that when they make such comments just reply that at this time you are still enjoying having hair of your length and don't really see any reason to change that. Then move the conversation to something else.
Finchquilts - I agree, I am uncomfortable when people touch my hair without permission. I have been know to say to strangers "Oh, I'm sorry, let me get my hair out of your way", then move my hair out of their reach. |

drummergirl, I will be a high school senior next year and am in the same position concerning my hair and my family. It's unfortunate when even your relatives can't accept you as you are; but stand strong, remember to love them anyway, and know that you aren't alone! It also helps to remind yourself how much money you're saving from all the extra styling products, coloring, haircuts, etc. etc. etc. ;)
Quote:
What about when someone hates having your hair touch them? Whenever I'm standing near my sister and my hair brushes against her by accident, she gets all disgusted and tells me to get it out of her way. Okay, fine; but really, it's just hair. It's not dangerous. I think she thinks I never shower or something. ::) |

I used to have long hair - I could sit on it - then I gave in to my friends and my mum saying I'd look good with it cut - and I got it cut shorter and shorter. I'm growing it back now, and it's mid-length, just touching my waist - and now I can say - well yeh, I tried it short for a year or two, but after all the work I put into it to grow it this long, and I'm still growing it, I don't want to cut it again! Though I am giving in to my mum and getting my fringe cut back in.

Drummergirl, i come from a large family, and part of the way familys relate is that they criticize each other! Just think, if we didn't have parents and siblings to make comments and point out our bad table manners(haha), where would we be? ;D That doesn't mean it's right for them to tell you what to do with your hair. I understand how annoying and insensitive that must seem. But, people who are close to us usually criticize because they think they know what's best, and they want to help us be the best that we can be! I realize I don't know your family, but their comments probably come from an honest (if pesky!) desire to help you! if you don't want their advice, try saying, "thanks for trying to help me with my hair, but I really like it the way it is, even if it's not fashionable (or whatever)". Be firm (yet polite:)) when you say this, and they will probably be like, "Well, okay then, whatever", and drop it.

Drummergirl - it's been a few months - any improvement in the "unsolicited hair comments" department?
As I've mentioned before - I've always had long hair. All through high school I got the same comments - why haven't you tried this 'do' or that 'do'... The Farrah look was in back then - which was rather "long" compared to more recent fashions - but still, the never ending comments "well meaning", of course :-/ After highschool, my sister and 2 of my 4 first cousins became (group :o gasp) hair stylists. They spent the better part of 2 years doing every imaginable evil to their hair - all in the name of schooling. My sister had at one time or another: fuscia, lavender, and white hair - the colors themselves were not the "bad" thing - just with constant coloring, her overprocessed hair was thin, straw-like and dreadful. (This from the girl who as a senior in highschool had some of the thickest golden blond hair I'd ever seen - she wore it below shoulder length - and her pony tail took two hands to hold, it was so thick ... after 'beauty' school - once she realized what damage she'd caused - and tried to regain her 'locks', it never again had the same lustre, color, or thickness. After it all - her hair is probably 1/2 as thick as it was previously. Such a shame. The REAL family comments started after they'd all graduated, and I think they made bets with one another as to who could get me to cut my hair first... More than 20 years later - guess who won? ME! After all these years it has become light and playful jesting, with no real thought of causing me distress or getting me to change my mind - no one still believes I'll ever cut my hair - (Though I think my cousin had palpatations when I asked her to do the 5 inch trim this summer - to finally do away with the last evidence of an old perm). Long hair is part of my persona. No one will ever change that - and it's kind of nice - after all of these years - that they've all given up trying. So.... you may have time to bide until those around you will respect that: yes, you really DO know what you like - and - no, they're not going to change your mind with a few petty comments. Hang in there! nightowl |
Title: Re: Do people tell you to cut it? Post by styg on Nov 12th, 2004 at 9:36am
people never told me to cut mine. relatives will usually whine it's too dark and that it gives me a severe look (have you ever heard such crap!!). i have to note that the one that whines the most has a daughter who looks like an absolute moron with her bleached + highlighted hair: she has very red cheeks, a fake tan (just imagine the great combination ahumm) and then this weird color, i dunno what it is, something pale with highlights for which she pays a 100€ a month ... spoken of people who can't see what color fits ::)
my mother warned me before i wanted to cut it some 4 or 5 years ago: men prefer it long (dunno if they also prefer blond though, mine certainly doesn't). even classmates (all short-haired, who usually say how annoying long hair must be (poor them, they should know better!) ) told me not to do it, but well, all through primary and highschool and then uni i had 6-year patterns, every 6 years i'd just feel the need for change. i think having found good info o n doing updo's hopefully will prevent me from cutting it all off again :D |

Here's one for your horror stories...
When I was in high school, and my hair had reached waist length, I got lots of compliments from friends, and snide looks from the popular girls. But! I think my hair did the charm on some guys, I got asked to a lot of social funcions. (Not dates, social functions. My parents believed if we "group dated" we'd get into less trouble) :-[ It worked though! At any rate, one night when I was out with this particular fellow, we were all (20 or so) sitting down to get a quick bite at Steak N Shake before catching a movie. Well, during the normal course of conversation, my fellow leaned over and proceeded to tell me he adored girls with short hair. Mmmhmmm. I asked him why he even asked me out, and then he said "to talk you into cutting your hair. It would be so lovely." *GASP!* How ridiculously rude!! Needless to say, I didn't go out with him again. The biggest problem I have nowadays are guys trying to touch my hair.. I've been in several bar situations where I'll go up to the bar to get a drink (my hair down) and some fellow will come up behind me and immeadiatly thinks he can stroke my hair.. "Whatcha drinking, darling?" Trust me boys, we don't like that! I need a certain amount of personal space, especially if I've never met you before, and besides.. I DO NOT know what's been on those hands! |

And as regards strange fellas touchin my hair....I don't think I would be so forgiving. >:( HIIIIIII - YAA!!!! Kung Foo Rua!!! ;D |

I needed you today. I was at the bart station in San Francisco and a kid started petting my hair. It wasn't really threatening, and I think he was mentally challenged (I'm not sure that's the right term these days), but my partner had to push him away when he kept doing it. Really wierd. I need to learn to be more assertive, I just don't like to be mean. Valerie |

Actually it's funny that you mention that Valerie. Kids are kind of a tough one. It's easily to "Kung Foo Chop" adults because they should know better, but with kids...ekkk...it's difficult. About 2 weeks ago we were babysitting these two kids of friends of ours. They are from Africa and the little girls is about 4 years old. All her life she's had someone braid her hair they way they do with African hair. Well, the wee girl decided that she wanted to braid MY hair - and she doesn't yet know how to braid. At all. Before I could stop her, she had a section of my hair (I was sittin with her on my lap at the time) and started working a MASSIVE knot in the middle. My hair knots easily as it is, without the help of a 4 year old. LOL So, what I did was carefully took my hair away from her and said nicely, "Ok, here I'll finish it." And swept my hair up in a really fast bun - every last strand - so as not to leave any to temptation for her. Then I thanked her very much for doing my hair for me. She quickly lost interest and ran off to play. Thank goodness. It took me about 20 minutes to work out the knot that had accumulated. Can you imagine if I had let her finish my whole head? AAAKKKK!!! :o :o :o |

I doubt I would have had the patience for it and probably would have ended up with a lot more broken ends. |

I'm a bit shocked.
As most of you probably know by now, my hair is a bit past shoulder line, so it's not very long. And I'm 27. So, I went to have a cup of coffee with my mother. She's always hoped that I'd grow some hair -she has never liked it when my hair was short. I thought she would be happy now. And the big compliment she told me was... Mom:"You look so nice now that you have some hair. When you get a bit older, you'll cut it, but now it looks nice." Me: *looking blankly at her*"What makes you think that I ever intend to cut it?" Mom:*looks shocked*" But of course you should. People cut their hair when they age." *in as a matter-of-fact-tone* Me:" Well, I probably won't." Mom:"You'll change your opinion when you get your first gray hairs and must start coloring regularly. What would your hair look like then, if it was a mix of gray and blonde? " Me:*in glacier-calm tone*" I guess it will look like a mix of gray and blonde hair. And I'm going to accept it." *changes subject* I didn't even bother mentioning that one of my closest friends is well in her fifties and has a lovely, long, gracefully graying hair. |

Oh dear, Galadriel. You're situation sounds like you are dealing with the increasingly common idea that once you hit a certain age, you have to have old lady short poodle hair.
Honestly, I don't get that! Where is it coming from? Who's propagating this? ??? Don't give in!! There is nothing more refreshing than seeing people of all ages with lovely long locks....whether they have grey, white, black, blonde, green, purple, blue, whatever hair! :) |

Thanks, guys! :)
I don't understand either, what's wrong with aging long-haired. Except that it's not very usual. Sometimes when I get a moment of paranoia, I suspect that there's a worldwide conspiracy of hairdressers who want to get people caught in vicious circle of short, dyed and permed hair. I think that after one has done these things to her hair, it's pretty difficult to start growing it long and healthy again. And then some of these people just want to spread their misery around and tell those of us who haven't yet fallen to hairstylists' trap to cut it. |
Title: Re: Do people tell you to cut it? Post by styg on Nov 22nd, 2004 at 9:30am
i dye my hair and have no problems!!! of course ... i do dye it myself ;)
i know someone who hasn't cut her hair since decades (at least 22 years) - she doesn't even dust for split hairs - and also bleaches it ... of course it looks pretty dead from close by (especially the ends look brittle) and only the hairs of her neck seem to reach classic length (it seems to break of in a V-pattern). but even then, it seems to be in a better state than one would expect. it stimulates me to think that non-neglected hair really can reach (one length) classic length, even when it's dyed. |

you can assume the ones who tell you to cut are just totally jealous, and the ones who love it are honest. i know tons of people who admire me for having the patience to grow hair. people who want quick changes usually cut it. personally when i get bored or depressed i get myself some new make up or try to do some hair styles with my clumsy hands and non-cooperating hair.

If one has cut her hair, the only ways to change is to wait it to grow again a bit...and with an elaborate haircut, there's no way to change style from day to day.
If I get bored with a bun, I can always make a braid, or start experimenting. Or wear different hair ornaments. Problem solved! |

I started this post a long, long time ago and somehow ended up reading over it again. The other day this lady was sitting in the office I work in and she kept asking me, "How can you stand all that hair?" I took a moment and looked at her and realized that this woman had one of the ugliest heads of hair I have ever seen. ( I am not saying that to be mean, so stay with me. ) I think the answer is usually pure and simple jealousy. People still ask me everyday how much time I spend on my hair and they are shocked when I tell them I wash it once/week and spend less than 5 minutes on it/day. I think people are never going to get it!! And yes, these people are all women. I guess that some women are just mean to each other. it's sad. Okay, enough rambling!!LOL!!

It's funny when people mention their husband's love of their long hair. My husband is so clueless. The other day he was looking at the girl Jamie-(something) from the Sopranoes and he decided, my hair looked just like hers. Of course, this was meant as a compliment, but my hair is well below my bottom and hers is like just below the shoulders and at least 2 shades darker. I kept thinking, have we met?? LOL!! (He also seems to think that I am only about 15 pounds overweight, but I am actually about 65 pounds overweight, so I can't complain!! ;))

So I guess you were too nice to respond in kind. She really needed a comeuppance, you know. "How can you stand all that hair?" Excuse me? "How can you stand all that hair?" Glance up at her hair. Um, how can you stand having hair like that? Stare into her eyes coldly. Watch her squirm. Let her break the stare. |

Yes, people keep telling me that all the time. That I should be fashionable, change my image, that I can't go through life looking the same way for ever. My mum has had a(n) a-la-garconne hair cut for as far back as I can remember and is forever buggering me to cut it short because it would suit my face type better.
I did give in and had it cut 3 times in my life, once a boyish cut, once chin length and once just touching my shoulders. I remember one friend telling me, after the last cut that was the shoulder-length one, that at last I had got rid of those 'rags' hanging behind me. I was shocked! People just have different ideas of what is beautiful and their ideas don't necessarily agree with ours. |

I think most people today don't have a clue about really long hair -- I'm still learning since mine has never been more than BSL and that was 30 years ago ( :o time flies) and I sure didn't know how to do all the neat styles, etc. that I've been learning about from y'all. So people probably relate to their own experiences with "short" long hair which is really the growing out phase -- and we all know how tiresome and irritating that is :P. I hope I will not forget that when I start getting those comments so I answer with a kind word or :) or :-X

Yeah, long hair does have an interesting effect on people. I think my best friend wants me to cut me hair, but I think she would be ok if I told her I wasn't going to.
Ok, my story: I grew my hair out in high school until it was waist length. I liked the compliments I recieved, but there were days when the hair just drove me nuts. I kept telling myself that I just had to wait until I graduated then I could cut it. The day after I graduated, I cut it to between my shoulders and my chin!! I was relieved. I thought I looked cute with it short. Many others did too, but I had several people come up to me and almost cry because I chopped all my hair off. Mind you, these people said nothing while it was long. Sigh. Well, I then decided to grow it out again until I graduated university. I've gone back and forth about cutting it once I graduate or waiting until I get married. I think I've come to the decision of never cutting my hair!! (and there was much rejoicing) :D I'm up to elbow length and am aiming for classic length and then I don't know what the next step will be. Sorry that was so long. Those of you who don't like your hair touched, is there a specific reason or do you just feel like your personal space bubble is being invaided? I ask this because I like it when people touch my hair. True, I don't let kids do my hair, but I don't mind if they touch it. Also, are any of you long haired ladies moms? Did you have problems with your babies grabbing handfulls of hair? Is the only way to fix that to put the hair up? Meg |
Title: Re: Do people tell you to cut it? Post by bikerbraid on Jul 11th, 2005 at 6:07pm
I don't mind people touching my hair IF I know them, or they ask and I'm feeling OK about it. I DON'T like people grabbing my braid or pony tail without asking. My reasons for this are:
- are their hands reasonably clean? I don't care to have strawberry jam smeared in my hair, thank you very much. - are they a weirdo that might cut/slash my hair? - my hair is part of my personal space, which I prefer to not have invaded. (Exceptions: when I turn real fast and whip someone with my braid or tail - I always apologize and make sure they are OK - after all I have just invaded their space). - I think it is appropriate to expect respect for me, my space, and my hair. Sorry, I am no help with the kiddie question - I was one of those who cut their hair when I had kids so that I would not have to deal with spitup in my hair. I think I could handle it now - but I'll wait for the grandkids to test my theories (and I hope to have to wait a few more years for the grandkids! ;D ) |

To answer the first question - yes! People tell me to cut my hair. But then again, those same people told me I should grow it out when it was short. ;-)
As far as moms, I don't have kids but my sister-in-law had 3. She never cut her hair (she has beautiful super-thick Latina hair.) She would just keep it in a scrunchied ponytail at the nape of her neck. Nothing extravagent. So that way, when the kids messed up her hair, it was easy for her to put back. Later when the kids were older, she started putting more time into putting up her hair again. Cynde |

I am one of those who cut my hair when my daughter was about a year old, not because she was grabbing it, but because it was down to my knees and I couldn't comb its length.
The reason I hate people touching my hair is because it's so personal that to touch it is an invasion of my space. People who know you wouldn't do this without asking, and if they did ask it'd be ok. For a male to touch my hair is like foreplay, something I'd only do with someone I have a relationship with. |
Title: Re: Do people tell you to cut it? Post by divewench on Jul 22nd, 2005 at 6:29pm
To wishing4longhair: I too, like to have my hair touched. Of course, I've never had anyone I don't know try, so that would probably be a different story.
I'm also a mom, and didn't cut my hair when I had either of my children, although I was certainly told I should! Some people (my mother) even said things like: "Well, now that you're going to have kids, you'll finally be cutting your hair." Uh, no, I don't think so. Some of my favorite memories of when my children were babies involve my hair. Both of them adored for me to slowly drag my hair back and forth across their faces, my son would chuckle and smile, and it even put my daughter to sleep. My son (he just turned 2!) still loves to stroke my hair while I read him his bedtime stories, and if I'm leaning over with my hair down, he'll duck underneath, look up and me and laugh: "hiding!" |

I have the bad habit of giving into urges to get my hair cut and I always get stick for it. Luckily the women who matter to me in my life encourage those who can carry it off to wear their hair long and my MIL just turned 70 and has long beautiful hair and she won't give into her children's and other people's urgings to cut her hair off. Good for her! It's brown but I don't know if it's natural or dyed. Doesn't matter, it looks great! Her hair is healthy and thick, has some curl/wave to it and she can wear a variety of styles many women her age can only dream of.
Hub doesn't care what I do as long as my hair doesn't get shorter than his ;D |

ooh, firefly that is lucky!
I guess I'm lucky too, as one of my good friends has almost tailbone hair, and my bestest best has taken our example and is growing hers out too... I haven't had anyone tell me to cut it yet, but then, my grandmother doesn't know about how long it is, or my wish to make it longer. If she did, she'd start harping on me to cut it. *shrugs* she's like that. |
Title: Re: Do people tell you to cut it? Post by Angel Spun on May 6th, 2007 at 9:38pm
Wow...those sound like some pretty supportive friends, saving you from yourself. ;D
Mine don't really care about my hair that much. Obviously, they might say something if I decided to go with a neon green military-style buzz cut, but they'd also probably get used to it even if they didn't care for it. So long as I'm happy with my hair, then that's what matters, right? My parents do not support my long-haired aspirations at all and urge me to cut it short all the time. I'm pretty used to it. My father never holds back from telling me how pathetic it looks long, or how awful it looks in general, whenever the urge to say so strikes him. I guess he doesn't believe that anyone with fine, thin hair should grow it long. I understand his point of view, but long hair is part of who I am and I really can't do anything about its texture (which I inherited from him, actually). Besides, I think that if hair is kept healthy, it can look just fine when grown out long, regardless of texture. But I have my opinion, he has his. The difference is that I don't feel the need to force my opinion on him. *ahem* Anyway, I do have a few family members who are fans of my hair. My sister, aunt and 2 of my cousins love how naturally soft it is and can't resist touching it whenever the urge strikes...which I really don't mind. I've even let my cousins style it on occasion. But yeah, I have to battle the "cut it off" comments like a lot of folks. Some people just can't respect what other people like and aspire to...even if it's not hurting anyone. ::) |
Title: Re: Do people tell you to cut it? Post by Aphrodite_Nymphia on May 9th, 2007 at 10:08pm
First of all I should say hello, I stumbled upon this site while looking for Edwardian hairstyles online and I have to say it is like coming home!! I have had long hair most of my life, from late primary school (after a disasterous shoulder length cut, which might I add I was tricked into - that is the last time my hair has been short) onwards - I am now 23 - and people ask me if/when I am going to cut it all the time. Mostly these comments come from extended family, aunts etc. very rarely from my parents or siblings. I did have one best friend at school though who was always on at me. She had gorgeous long, deep red wavy hair, but when we were 14 she chopped it off into a shoulder length flipped cut. I have to admit it suited her much better (although she did have beautiful hair previous) and it was perhaps the constant dyeing afterwards that did the real damage, but after that she was always nagging me to follow suit.
Nowdays, though, it is hairdressers that give me the most bother. Luckily I have found one, who works out a lovely boutique salon at her home, who will trim as little or as much off my hair as I wish, but I also highlight my hair and I go to a different salon for this. I suppose I should note that my hair fluctuates between mid back length to waist length in any given year and when I highlight it it is always the former, my trusted hairdresser having given it a good cut the day before. In that sense it is nowhere near as long as some of you have your hair, but it is quite long for where I live (Northern Ireland, although I go to college in Dublin and I haven't noticed anyone there either) indeed I rarely seen anyone with longer. Very short hair is all the rage here at the moment frequently in sharp, choppy styles with an unnatural mix of colours - definately not my thing and on some people I would hazard to say quite ugly. Anyway when I go to this salon (my last visit was my last) the stylists are always pushing me to get a short cut, "oh I would like to do it this way, that way etc etc" (eh, excuse me whose hair is it?!), even when I have only booked in for a colour. On one occassion, where I had just had a good six inches off the day previous, one stylist was blow drying my hair and perked up (might I add to another stylist as if I wasn't there) "oh we are going to have to give this a cut to get all these dead ends off". What dead ends? Is the assumption then that all long hair must be in an awful state? That was nothing, though, compared to my last visit. Again I went in for a colour having had my hair cut the day before and as usual the stylist started up about I'd like to do this, that and the other with it etc. etc. (all involving very short cuts) when I politely said no she took a complete huff, told me that having hair "that long" was ridiculous and when (in response to her question as to why I have long hair) I said that I prefer long hair and it is nice too to be a bit different when so many people have short hair these days, she responded "gee thanks!!" Other than that throughout the course of her colouring my hair she was rude and on occassions downright nasty, so much so that I couldn't wait to get out of there and was glad when she left earlier and one of the junior stylists dryed my hair. Having said all that (apologies for the long post) I wonder has anyone else had this type of experience with salons? Everytime I go I get a 'grilling' about why I have long hair and why I won't let them cut it short. In my younger years anytime I let such salons cut it when I said 2 inches I would come out with hair 6-7 inches shorter - did they think I didn't know what an inch was? Emma. |
Title: Re: Do people tell you to cut it? Post by Kiraela on May 9th, 2007 at 10:38pm
Oh, yes, I've had stylists, and even friends with half a semester of cosmetology under their belts(!) tell me how much better a short haircut is, and how it would look so much better on me, and blah, blah blah. I have a photo of myself after going in for "a tiny trim" and ending up with chin length hair (I previously had past shoulder length). Often I think it isn't we who cannot measure, but supposed stylists. It's all the bleach fumes, I think. ;) :o

Nice to meet you too. I am so glad I found this site, I have been having a read round the forum since yesterday and I have already picked up so many great tips on taking care of long hair. I must admit I do commit a bit of a sin in colouring my hair, but I am currently letting my natural hair colour grow out again. I did the same last year and my natural hair was grown out as far as my shoulders. I am not a big fan of highlights to tell you the truth because each time you get them done you are colouring the same hair and with long hair you have that hair for so long it weakens it. Anyway on the aforementioned trip to the salon I wanted to try something different and discuss colour that would be kinder on my hair and that I would not have to colour over and over again. I wanted to go blonder and I am natural blonde already so I didn't think it was that much to ask, but clearly it was because they just went ahead and did the same highlights over again, despite my saying that wasn't what I wanted. Ahhh sigh ... if only I could find a long hair salon ...
Actually that, and this thread, reminds me when I was in first form at secondary school there was this girl that must have been about lower or upper sixth at the time (for those of you from the US I should probably explain, secondary school here is from 11 to 18. In the first form I would have been 11/12 depending on the time of year. Lower sitxth and upper sixth I think would be the equivalent of juniors and seniors at high school) and she had the most beautiful, shiny, waist length blonde hair. It was in excellent condition and I was in absolute awe of her, but towards the end of upper sixth she chopped it all off until it was just above her shoulders and I have always thought since that she lost a bit of her sparkle when she did. It turns out too that she was a natural brunette a she then let the colour grow out, which just proves to me now that I think of it that I certainly should be able to get a brighter colour and keep my hair in good condition. Emma. |

As a guy I think this has got to be the most interesting, fascinating and heartwarming thread I have ever read about a lady's genuine love of long hair, since I first started following and occasionally participating on long hair message boards back in about '97 !!
It's been so wonderful.... Truly. So much to try to remember all at once that it'll take ages to work through !! The first thoughts. Do what you feel and follow your heart. If you love long hair then that's all you need. Answerbacks as to why you should cut it, no matter how slyly guilt-ridden and phrased they might be (!), are I believe ridiculously easy ! "OK fair enough. But first YOU tell me why YOU love short hair so much .....?" Yadda, yadda.... running out of steam.....yadda... Well that's what I THINK !! So there ! "Hey great ! That's exactly why I love long hair so much as well !!" Byeeee... :P :P Welcome Emma ! Funny seeing Marilyn M again.... ;) So much more to say but hey after 3 or 4 English pints.... :-[ :-[ Seriously I have adored reading all of it and have now seen and understood what it's like from a lady's point of view for I think the first time ever. Again a very humble thank you. Most guys do love long hair yes though few have the courage to admit it openly, especially to old friends for all the usual softie reasons!! If you want to know how this long haired loving guy feels see my first intro to LLSalon on about Jan 12th or so. As you say it goes so verrrrry deep, just as much this side of the fence too. Cadie ;) Why do they make the keys on keyboards so small ? |

On wednesday this week, I was at the library and I happened to pick up the newspaper. The front page article featured an 11 year girl cutting off 19 inches of hair for locks of love. As I was reading the article, an older man comes up behind me and says "you are a candidate for that too!" I politely said "NO". He said, "why not"! I said "NO". He said "not even to help out someone else?" I said "NO". Boy, was he ever trying to put me on a guilt trip. Some people dont get it even if you take the time to explain it to them.

Aww, Joan. I get the same harassment for my pallor from my UV-worshipping family. My parents dislike it every bit as much as they dislike my hair, but both of them have skin cancer. So not only do I take their insults with a grain of salt, but in the midst of them, I politely remind my dear folks that my paleness beats the alternative. As a friend of mine once said: "The whiter, the better." ;)

Not only all of the above mentioned, but---it also makes a person look older later in life than they are. Besides I found it to be a waste of time. When I was younger, I wanted to tan really bad, but being a redhead with freckles, all I did was burn and peel. I am 2 yrs older than my sister but I look about 7yrs younger.

this may be a stretch from the original thread, but recently i've embraced my shortness. not of hair, but of stature. i've been buying more comfy shoes, and cute ones not worrying that i'm very short without added heels. fyi, for me cute shoes means kind of cloggish-hand made with cool designs and antique look-not stilletos or super high heels. i even bought sassy boots to wear with skirts-and much to my friends' dismay-they are cowboy boots. :)
so all that to say, my skin has a slight olive undertone-but i'm still very very light. i did try to tan in college, but i'm far past that now and wear sunscreen all the time. i'm also no longer trying to change my hair color-it's brown. so i like my look. that's what i'm saying. |

I've recently embraced my shortness too.. 5'1 and proud! I wear heels once in a blue moon, but i'm almost always in comfy slip on shoes, or my work boots, Even in skirts... (imagine, if you will, a girl in a green teeshirt, purple ankle length skirt and steel toed work boots with brown laces) As for hair shortness... it still doesn't feel long enough.

I'll join the ranks of embrasing my shortness (5'2") and long hair, but I'm afraid I' an outdoors gal. I do try to protect my skin and I never allow myself to get a sunburn, but I do tan easily. I don't work on getting a tan, but it happens when you spend as much time as I do in the sun. (and as for the shortness - I gave up heels in the early 80's when I started to have back problems. Birks are my primary shoe now.)

Only once did someone say I should cut my hair or put it up in a bun. I was working in an office in NYC and was the vice presidents assistant. She wasn't nasty about it or anything, so I put it up in buns or rolls. Lately? No one has said a thing which means no murders in my area for a while! LOL!! ;D

The nerve of some people! They're definitely jealous of you. Maybe some genuinely think long hair is unflattering on short women but what would make them voice this opinion is beyond me. Surely they have more important things to concern themselves with than your hair. Btw. I'm 4'10"ft , my hair isn't long anymore, hasn't even been waist length for over 20 years and I haven't settled on a final length and I don't know how long it can grow but no one's going to have an influence on what I decide to do with my hair!
I'm "a little" late. Actually, my story is the opposite. Everyone says that since I have such gorgeous, shiny, straight, Asian hair, I MUST keep it long. I know it's meant as a compliment but I hate being dicatated to and now that I've cut it off but am growing it back, I'm too proud to tell people that while I don't think my hair is as gorgeous and certainly not as low maintenance as they imagine, I know they're right about what looks best. My official excuse for growing it out is that I can't afford the trims and I can't get the hang of blow drying and styling a bob, forget shorter hair = higher cost, higher maintenance for me. I don't know if there would be a length where people would tell me to cut it off. My 72 y.o. MIL has gorgeous, long, curly, brown hair with hardly any greys in. Yet everyone's been nagging her to cut it off for ten years now. Then one of her daughters offered to trim the ends but she cut it off just below my MILs shoulders! :'( I thought that was so cruel but of course I've kept my mouth shut. She's an older lady plus her hair's curly so it doesn't grow as fast as younger hair. She's not said it directly but I know she's sad about the loss and it hasn't grown much since it was cut off last Fall. Not enough to notice :( She does such beautiful updos. Well, she used to anyway. She wasn't letting it hang down and drag down her features. Not all of her styles were good for her hair but generally it's in good condition. Our queen (I'm Danish, dad's American, and I'm adopted from Thailand so I have Asian hair) has long grey hair. She's an older lady too. I don't buy into the whole hair-length-by-age-dictation thing. |

I got told a lot to cut it when it was a little past my shoulders I got the Locks of Love speech way to many times to keep count. Family and High School (was in at the time) where the worst and I finally caved however refused to give the hair to locks of love.

I never get told to cut my hair! Quite the opposite, I just don't have my family's faith that I can grow it to mid-back length. Probably because I have never in my entire life had hair that was past my shoulders.

I've never been told to cut my hair, yet, and I wouldn't listen to anyone if they said it. I find it so pathetic that people feel it's their job to tell others what to do with their hair, maybe if they had lives they'd mind their own business, no one tells them to grow theirs long so why do they think it's their "mission" to get long haired individuals to cut their hair? >:( That just rubs me the wrong way. And the funny thing was I sorta had an experience of that nature already. Last fall, I was standing in a grocery store waiting for my mom, I had my hair down, and mind you it was only 24" at the time or BSL so not even very long in my opinion. And I heard a woman walk by and say to herself "why would anyone want so much hair?" Needless to say I shot her a filthy look as she went past thinking to myself some nasty retorts about her boyish looking short hair, but she wasn't worth my time so I did no more then that. But seriously why did it even concern her? She didn't know me from adam, and I could care less what she does with her hair, and yet she said it like I was too stupid to get my hair cut.... yeah well at least people aren't questioning my gender. ;D

LOL Tanai ;D
As others and I have said before, I think that at least part of it is jealousy. Some people seriously have the mentality of "Yes cut it! So you have short hair like me! Muahahahaha!" Like since they don't have long hair, you can't either. ::) Another thing is ego. How many people think, "well, if everyone in the world was exactly like me, the world would be a much better place!" ?? Since that woman didn't prefer her hair long, she obviously didn't understand why anyone else would want their hair long. Or maybe her husband left her for a long-haired lass and she's got a personal vendetta. ;D |

It gets some women fired up because they view long hair on anyone over 25 as being ignorant of how it's a sign of submission to men's beauty ideals for women. It may be to many men but there are also many men who genuinely aren't attracted to long hair on a woman or who genuinely don't pay attention one way or the other. It also never occurs to these women that some of us are perfectly confident women who keep our hair long for ourselves.
At the time I looked my most goth and was most active on goth forums there were many goths who for all in the world couldn't understand why I wouldn't cut off my naturally long, black hair and have crazy, dyed extentions put in instead. I wasn't upset with them, just disappointed that they turned out to be pretty average people with average, narrow mindsets. I admire them for going against the grain but they should extend the same tolerance towards others which I rarely experience that they truly do. Ditto the same observation and experience with vintage 1930s-50s enthusiasts. I take my hat of for their dedication to era correct styles and hair sacrifice for authentic styles but they completely deny that there have always been unfashionable/trend oblivious women who did their own thing and kept their hair long. Both my late maternal grandmother and MIL were such ladies who have had long hair at times when nearly all other women had short hair. Of course they didn't have long flowing hair, even they would've seen that as disorderly but there's nothing historically incorrect in having long hair and not being willing to torture the hell out of it. However, these same vintage enthusiasts have no problem with rockabilly girls with tattoos, piercings and unnaturally dyed hair that would've been very unusual and frowned upon in their beloved decades. I have no problem with what others do, how they dress or keep their hair. It's the hypocricy that gets to me. Actually, the haircut I got at the end of Spring to even out things and be left with healthy hair is working against me because everyone, even those who were supportive of my long hair mission, like this cut too much. Go figure! ::) |

Oh of course it's most likely jealousy, "why doesn't my hair look like that?" "I wish I had the patience to grow my hair long" blah blah blah. Yep or the whole "clone" syndrome, if we all look the same there's less competition :P *pfbttt* why would I deliberately want to be like anyone else? I have a hell of a time being me. Quote:
Also another good possibility, and again fits into the "clone" mindset. That and some can't grasp why anyone wouldn't want to be exactly like them because for some strange reason they think it's all about them (hah the missed the memo it's all about ME! lmao ;D ) Quote:
rotfl, I like this one the best ;) Drear wrote on Aug 5th, 2008 at 5:54am:
*pfbtt* :P I'm certainly not much of a feminist, I do believe that no one's subservient to anyone heck women should be above men, we are the one's who make it possible to have a future generation, leave that up to men and where would the world be? I personally haven't met a man who isn't attracted to long hair, but then again I'm trying to get a man so it all works out in the end. ;) But why some people always insist on turning something that is, in the end, totally a matter of choice, and I doubt there are many women who are doing it for any other reason then because they want to, into some expression of backward thinking is beyond me. Personally I've had short hair, on some people it can be very attractive, I just find long hair easier to style. *shrugs "can't we all just get along?" 8-) * |

I find longer hair is easier to care for and style too. I get so fed up with hearing that shorter hair means lower maintenance, lower costs, etc. The hell shorter hair does [not]!

Longer hair is deffinitly easier to take care of. My hair is really short right now, and I cant wait till it gets at least shoulder length so i dont have to do much with it in the morning. I remember just wetting my hair and pulling it back before i cut my relaxed ends off. My hair just two inches right now, so i got 11 inches before im shoulder length.
