Title: auburn with olive complxion
Post by kmm on Sep 16th, 2003 at 3:38pm
Hi! Hope this area isn't for natural redheads only...I've colored my hair (for a while now) from a very deep dark black-brown to a much softer auburny shade. Suits me much more! I have olive skin, (though v. pale) ...just wondering if I'm only one like this. R more of u out there? If so, let's chat!

I don't match your combination, but my mother does.  Her hair was a drab dark brown until she started coloring it with an auburn color.  As her natural color has turned more grey (probably 85% now), the resulting color is becoming more red.  I really like the color of her hair with her olive complexion.  Not to mention it makes her look about 20 years younger than her 80 years! :o  Now if I could just get her to grow it long!  8)

how long does she currently have it? Odd how mom's are that way about hair, eh? My mom's hair is shoulder-length (just barely, though) and she won't consider growing it much longer (feels like she's too old for it :o)
Amazingly enough, she's even always after ME to cut my hair shorter! NOOOO :o! I have had very short cuts in the past (remember the mushroom look that was "in' in the 80's? I had it!)

;D Her hair is in a "mushroom bob"!  Her hair still has a lot of body and is pretty good condition considering she colors it.  At least she doesn't do the perm thing as most of her peers do.  I think that is part of why she still looks so young - a youthful hairstyle and color.  She has considered growing it out a bit longer.  She would like to be able to put it into a ponytail, but her hair is fairly thin and she is afraid it would be too thin.  I keep encouraging her to give it a try - what has she got to lose?  At 80, I think she is entitled to do whatever she wants.

I think so too! I think she'd look great with longer hair! Aren't you inspiration enough?  ;D

My mother is not my strongest supporter for my long hair.  :-/  But she does admit I know more about keeping hair healthy than she does, so at least she does listen to me in that area.  She would prefer my hair be no longer than shoulder length.  Oh well  :P

Lucky for me, my Mum supports whatever decisions I have with my hair (just as long as I don't TALK about it too much  ;))! She didn't say a WORD when I cut it short and experimented with coloring and blow dried all the tiem, but when I expressed my wish to grow it long and healthy again, she was overjoyed  ;D! Her face doesn't suit long hair but she loves it so she lives vicariously through me!

I'm glad your mother admits that you know how to keep hair healthy! My mother always comes to me for advice too, and so do all of my aunts... they also come to me to get their hair done (braids, updos, etc) and call me Leia Salon  ;)

You really are lucky! Enjoy it for as long as i'ts there..my mom's face doesn't really suit the pixie cuts and short short hairstyles, but that's what SHE LOVES. So guess what I'm always being pressured to do....she won't admit that my long hair suits me much more than a short do!

That's a good attitude to have!

And I just realised I haven't answered your initial question. I'm sorry but I'd have to say that I don't like reddish tones at all with olive complexions, but only because I see so many Indian girls around here do it and it really really doesn't suit them  :-[. It probably suits you, though! This is just my honest opinion!

Don't ever be afraid to speak yr mind...no-one here will shoot you, especialy not me...i agree with u, we actually see a lot of Asian girls out here in b.c. with dyed red/blond locks, totally doesn't suit them (except for when they do the tipping thing, love that). Hopefully our east indian gals out here won't do it too!

I actually like it when Asian gals dye their hair, as most of them are very pale skinned and sometimes their black hair can look too harsh! One Korean girl I know permed the bottom part of her BSL hair, and it looks just lovely in an orange-reddish color  ;D

What is tipping?

I agree sometimes the dark dark hair looks too "heavy" on them....I had the same problem, being 5 ft. 3", 125 pds.  I only don't like it when they dye ALL their hair some shade that's totally unnatural to them - like platinum blonde! Tipping is just coloring the ends of the hair, usually in a really bright shade...pink, red, orange or blue are the most popular out here right now. Also popular for "tipping" is to color very dark hair just at the ends a platinum or very bright blonde...the contrast is just gorgeous..maybe one day I'll get up enough nerve to try it myself!

Ooh! I have never seen that! It must be horrible for split ends though!

Yup,I imagine you will get split ends with tipping, even if you were splits-free before..... ;)

I've never been particularly fond of tipping.  It usually looks like a bad dye job.  Maybe I've just never seen anyone with their hair styled in a way to make it look good.

Don't think so! Girl at work does it to her hair occasionally, she's never mentioned split ends. Probably only bad for hair if you do all the time..

Hi kmm!
I have naturally brunette hair with reddish highlights and am also of a very pale olive complexion.  I used to color my hair years ago, anywhere from strawberry to penny red, and all shades in between, it was fun, but very damaging to my hair.  This is the first time in a long time that my hair is completely natural, and I am very happy with it.  In the summer, the sun gives me some very blonde streaks that vary from almost a bleached blonde to a mustard yellow color, it's really neat!  I am not a sun goddess in any way, shape or form, In fact the only time I am in the sun is if I am doing outside work around the house, but that is enough I guess.  One year I used a lemon-based gel in my hair while I was outside to highlight around my face, and that worked really well without drying my hair out badly.  Because of my complexion, I usually stick to earth tones and olive greens for my clothing, I cannot get away with pastels or bright colors, it just does not look right with my skin tone.  But that's ok, cuz I'm an earthy kind of gal, so I don't mind a bit!  Even my make-up stays within the earthy shades, usually a brown or olive shimmer for the eyeshadow, a brown eyeliner, black mascara, brownish-peach for the cheeks, and varying shades of brown for my lipgloss and lipstick.  I'm kind of like a walking pile of moss and bark...ha ha! ;D

I know this is old but I had so ask. If any of you have seen my fotki you know my complextion, I'm brown. I am mixed and my Irish mom gave me a smattering of freckles across my nose. I henna my hair and it as a reddish tint. Do you think that color is ok with my complexion?

I think it suits many NE Asians too because they're so fair skinned.  In some historical time they may have had outdoor jobs that tanned their skin but now that many work indoors and can use sun protection, if they feel the contrast is too harsh (I love dramatic contrasts though) then I see no reason why they can't go blonde, natural shades of red, lighter brown as long as the results look "natural".  By natural I mean the hair color and not necessarily that you believe the girl was born with that color hair.

I just wish that 1) I suited natural tones of red.  2) failing that, I wish I had fairer skin for a more dramatic contrast to my black hair.

Actually, some people with deep olive complexions suit that very deep "coke" shade that's a berry red/dark brown shade.  I only suit unnatural berry and wine shades which is fine when I feel for that sort of drama.
