A wonder drug for dry or curly hair is coconut oil. You may rub a little bit of it into your hands and knead it into your hair and especially hair tips. It makes the hair glossy and sleek but not greasy.

Hi... I'd like to try coconut oil, but I'm not sure what to do with it! ??? You mention we can "also" apply it with our hands, which leads me to believe we take this coconut oil orally?? I'm really confused.

In this situation, the coconut oil would be applied with the hands to the hair. I do the same to my hair with jojoba oil.

Jojoba oil.. do you think it's better than coconut oil??

I've never tried coconut oil myself. From what I have read it does work nicely on many people's hair. I have very fine hair, and it was suggested that the coconut oil would be too heavy for my hair. Jojoba oil is a very light oil that does not weigh my hair down.

Ohh.. okay. My hair isn't fine, although I have far less than I did a year ago. I tried the olive oil and egg mixture and it made my hair feel a lot better, so maybe the coconut oil would be a good thing for me to start with.

Where I live, all the native women use coconut oil in their hair. They actually keep it in all day, all the time. Since I live in a hot country many people have dry hair, so this helps their hair get moisturized and also stimulates their growth. I don't know any native women in this country who don't have hair to their waist or longer! In fact I think I just might have to try this... my hair is dry and is taking so long to grow!

Sounds encouraging! Where do you live, if you don't mind me asking?

Oh, how very cool! Wow, Indian women have such BEAUTIFUL hair, and now I know why! ;) Well, okay. I guess we can give some credit to genetics as well.

You're right! They do have wonderful hair. It's black and silky and long! Not many curlyheads though. In fact a lot of men (in rural villages of course) marry women because of their gorgeous hair! Haha they have a lot to learn ;). But I got cheated out of the beautiful hair deal! My mother is Pakistani, and wow she has gorgeous hair! It's black and straight, and my dad has black, straight hair too, and he's Indian! Don't ask me why, but my hair is wavy and brown. Haha! I hate it when it's this short! But when it's long it's the envy of my whole family who can never get their hair to grow long!

Yes,I have to agree!Indian and Pakistani women have some of the most beautiful hair in the world.I was born in Kenya, and as there is a large Indian/Pakistani community there,I remember admiring the long, shiny hair of the ladies even when I was a small child.I always wanted to have hair like that when I was grown up.Well,my hairīs dark blonde,so that didnīt work out ;D-but I attribute the fact that I have long hair today to these early influences of long, natural hair.

Here's a thread where we discussed oiling methods:
http://www.longlocks.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=longhaircare;action=display;num=1093883085; and you can buy coconut oil at health food stores as well as online from soapmakers' supply sites. (I replied to your recent query on buying jojoba) ;) Anais |

I'm a big advocate of coconut oil. Love the stuff. It's very light and does the business on my hair. I use it daily! ;D

I love my coconut oil, too, thanks to Rua!
What get I order I online from camden-grey.com and it is called fractionated coconut oil. It stays liquid and does not solidify like other coconut oils I have tried. I have tried some refined coconut oils that solidify at 76 degrees or so, not quite sure. Anais Satin knows. There is a virgin coconut oil that is said to smell very yummy. I wouldn't mind trying that for a hot oil treatment. But that will have to go on my "want list" for now. Another thing Rua told me about that I LOVE, ylang ylang essential oil. I put a few drops in my bottle of coconut oil and I also have a mist-er bottle with coconut oil, distilled water and several drops of ylang ylang. It is sooooo yummy! strawberryfine |

Oh, YAY!!! I'm so glad that those things worked out for you, Strawberryfine! :D :D :D :D
The ylang ylang is lovely, isn't it? I find that when I use it for a deep conditioning treatment at nighttime, the smell is so relaxing. It just chills me right out! (And that's really something for me, since I'm so sensitive to smells normally anyway!) ::) |

ylang ylang is wonderful! its another scent that I've used in the past to hide/mix with other oils. coco oil by itself smells too much like I've been sunbathing or something -- lol. |

While hanging out at my boyfriends mother's house, I found some coconut oil in her kitchen cabinet...It says on the back of the jar its pure 76 degree coconut oil, but its use is for popcorn...Could I put this in my hair or would it be no good because its been prepared for cooking? I'm always sooo clueless! ???
