Title: Split ends!!
Post by leia on Apr 9th, 2003 at 12:07pm
I don't know what to do! When my hair was hip-length, I had not one split end! My hair was dry though, which is why I cut it. But now that it's growing back I find split ends everywhere!! And because my hair is layered, I can't locate all of the split ends! I can't have a trim because I am trying to grow out the layers... what can I do?  ???

Hmm,if your hair is still dry,you could try to do something against it being dry-for example do a deep conditioning treatment more often(I like L īOreal Kerastase deep conditioner a lot,or the Biolage conditioning balm). So you could prevent new splits. As for the split ends being there already, this might sound silly-but maybe you could just ignore them for a while?  :P If you put your hair up,handle(comb/wash) it less often and give your hair a chance to grow longer, and THEN trim the splits. This strategy has helped my hair a lot-my hair is fine and just loves to split!Gentle products, updos and not thinking about it too much  ;D and nowadays I have hardly any splits. One more thing:I donīt cut off individual split ends, but trim off a few mm every 2-3 months from the total length. :)

Wow, that's a great tip! I deep condition every week. This has really helped reduce the number of splits. I really should ignore my hair for a while shouldn't I! I'll be surprised how much it will have grown and I'll wait longer amounts of time before I cut off the splits! My hair as a whole is thick, but each individual hair is fine or medium, and the fine ones split very easily! Well let's see if this method works, here's hoping!  ;D

What kind of updos do you do to keep your ends safe?

Letīs see-
1.my favourite updo is a braided bun held with hairsticks
2.a figure eight bun  with one hairstick
3.I make a regular ponytail, tie it off at the nape, divide it in 4 sections.I twist them tightly, arrange them around the base of the ponytail, secured with small claw-clips.
4.Sometimes just a regular bun with hairsticks or pins-with ends either tucked under the bun or sticking out. But you shouldnīt worry too much about your hair-it sounds like you have really nice hair! :D

How do you make the figure eight bun?

Haha, if only I could stop worrying about my hair. Maybe if I wore it up more often I wouldn't worry so much!

I hope I can explain this one properly:I start by making a regular bun(not a flat bun,but one that does stick out,by wrapping each new coil UNDER the previous one),then I sort of peel off the top-layer of the bun and lay it flat against the head. Then I secure the whole thing with a hairstick(I insert the stick through the top first, but with the jeweled end of the stick showing in the direction of the floor, then I flip the stick over-jeweled end showing in the direction of the ceiling- then push the stick through the whole bun.(Close to the scalp and coming out on the bottom of the bun)Oh well,Iīm not sure if this makes sense ???Iīm not good at explaining at all !!

That sounds fine! I'll try it tonight! I know how to do the hairstick-flip thing, and how you have to do it so that the tension is just right! Is your figure 8 vertical or horizontal?

Itīs an upright 8 ,vertical,I guess!

My 8 came out horizontal, but I will try to make it vertical tonight.

From now on I am going to start putting my hair in updos for most of the week! Now that I have some new ideas, I will put them to work and see how well I can fight the splits!
