Title: How long is your hair?
Post by robin on Feb 7th, 2003 at 10:32am
My hair is waist length, dark blonde, straight with a few waves on the underside.  I never planned on it getting this long - I just quit having it cut after growing out a pixie.  I am not sure I long I will grow it, but as long as it is still growing and I can find ways to bike with it, I guess I will let it keep growing.

How about the rest of you?  How long is your hair now?  How long have you been growing it?  Do you have a goal for its length?

My hair is bra length.  I'm growing my bangs out now.  They are finally getting managable, almost to ear length. I had blonde hair until last summer when I decided to go natural.  So now I have brown hair with a little gray in about 4 inches of the roots.  Someone told me it looks alright though.  It's very hard to go back to dark - it doesn't stick.  I've been seriously growing my hair for 6 months, but it was already past my sholders.  Bangs are the hardest part for my now.  I can't do much with the rest of it or my bangs will fall out. :o

Mine is mid-back at the moment. I really wish it would grow faster. But anyway I have full faith that cutting my hair on March 3rd will cause it to grow faster  :P! Haha well I've got to believe in something! My goal is down to my waist again and I haven't yet decided if I'm going to grow out my layers (I have a few layers right at the edge of my hair) and how long I want to grow my hair. I guess I'll just have to wait and see!

My hair is at bra-length at the moment. I had to cut it september 2002 on shoulder length and from this point Iīm letting it grow. I want to get waist-length again and to lose my layers. I hate them they make my hair look more thin than it anyway had become!

Why did you cut your hair?

Title: Re: How long is your hair?
Post by E. on Feb 7th, 2003 at 2:36pm
Because of massive hairloss.

My hair is almost waist length. It's not really long though, only 24". I will reach waist length at about 26 inches, I think. I guess I have a short torso.
My goal is tailbone length, about 33"(on me)

It does not sound like you have much further for your bangs to grow before they will work into your styles.  One trick that works particularly well with growing out bangs is to french twist  the hair on each side to your ears or further, depending on what style you are going for.  I still do this when putting my hair in a single braid, pony tail, or half up.  I have a few picture of this in my hair styles album at http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?uid=771714

Keep it growing!

So sorry to hear you have suffered such hair loss.  Have the loss diminished?  Are you taking any vitamins/supplements to help you with your hair growth journey?

Well, I did read that if you cut your hair on the New Moon it causes it to grow faster as well as cutting your hair on the Full Moon will keep it the same length (helpful to my mother, who keeps her hair above her shoulders and layered so every centimeter that grows out shows). I don't know exactly how it works, but women have a strange connection with the moon, for instance, our periods. I wouldn't be surprised if this actually worked.

Don't worry, E. In October I also suffered *massive* hairloss, and I cut my hair to shoulder length at the end of the month. I realised that the reason for this was because I was not eating, I literally... wasn't eating. I'm vegetarian and no one else in my family is so it's hard to get the proper nutrients, especially protein. Anyway when I realised what my anorexia was doing to my poor hair :(, firstly I cut it so that it would grow back healthy. Then I began to eat properly, I also take a multivitamin every day. I don't eat junk food at all (what a waste of being 14!!) and I only eat sugar minimally and only on weekends. For my meals I eat vegetable "bhaji" which is just an Indian mix of vegetables with "chappati" which is thin, round bread. This gives me my vegetables and carbohydrates. I make sure I drink a lot of water, and also eat a lot of fruits. Every day I have a glass of milk and an egg (for breakfast). I have a medium framed figure, so I would never look fat, but often when I go out I wear what's called a lengha or a sari which reveals the stomach. This made me want to exercise more so I do sit ups every day as well as run on the treadmill, and I have to run a mile every week in school.

After this new program of eating healthy and taking care of my body, my hair began to grow super fast, it's mid-back length already! It's also extremely healthy, never tangles and also it never... ever... falls. Not even one strand. So remember, treat your body well and your hair will appreciate it!!  :D

My hair is about 2 inches above my knees!  I started growing it out after a bad perm about 23 years ago...I was going to grow it until it hit the back of my knees or I turned 30 (I'll be 40 this year) now I'm trying for mid calf or maybe my ankles  who knows :)

The better you eat and take care of yur self the better your hair will be.  My mother-in-law just went through chemotherapy once a week for a year and her hair never fell out and it is more healthy now than it was before.  She says it is the fact that she really has to pay attention to how she eats and she has to take vitamins.
Her hair is a little longer than mid-back and she is 63 now.

Wow you are so lucky to have hair that long, Ginny!! Is your hair straight, wavy, or curly, and what color is it? Do you have any tips for growing hair?

Title: Re: How long is your hair?

Hey Leia

My hair is VERY VERY VERY straight.  I joke that it won't curl on threat of death...even when it was short when I was in junior high (the 70's) it wouldn't hold a curl.

It is a very pretty chestnut brown with some great reddish highlights...all natural!

In my younger days I tortured my hair with perms (no curls from those either only dead and unhappy hair)
I have never colored it...I have a few greys now (early stages of looking like Mel Brooks bride of frankenstein...the highlight grey stripes) It is all good though...at almost 40 a few greys are okay :)

My only tips are patience, a pretty good diet, and I try realy hard not to use products like rubberbands that I know will damage my hair, a good boar bristle brush, once or twice a winter I do a hot oil treatment with olive oil...other than that I really don't do anything out of the ordinary.

wash and wear hair!!! :)

I've always wanted straight hair! I find that if it's not thin, straight hair is really beautiful because it always looks neat. I hope I can wear my hair down when it's long again. I can't wear my hair down now because it's ... poofy... and ugly. lol! Patience, patience, patience! Why oh why did I have to cut my hair?  :'(

I am so sorry.  I have had good results with MSM, Biotin and Silica.  These along with a good multi-vitamin have slowed my hairloss.   Some common causes of hairloss can be, diet, stress, and thyroid malfunctions.  Have you seen a medical professional regarding your hairloss?  It could be a symtom of something more serious.

Ginny, your hair sounds beautiful.  How wonderful that you have been able to grow it to such a wonderful length and have the courage to "buck" society and keep it, even though you are soon to be 40. It sounds like there is no limit to the length of your hair!

Keep up the good work.   :D

Glad to hear it is not a significant medical problem, but the stress is serious enough.  Hope you can find a way to relieve it soon.

My hair is about 1 inch away from classic length, straight ,fine and dark blonde to light brown in colour.I let it grow again after a hairdresser cut it from waistlength(that story belongs to the hair horror stories) to a chin length bob seven years ago. IF my hair will grow that long,I would like to have knee-length hair one day.I  tried to post a picture here but unfortunately it didnīt work out.

Omigosh! Why on earth would she cut it that short?! And how long did it take to grow back?

Title: Re: How long is your hair?
Post by Anne-Marie on Feb 9th, 2003 at 2:58pm
I actually went in for trimming the ends only.I had some split ends, but (to me at least)my hair was in fair condition.Well, the hairdresser came, grabbed a strand of my hair, looked at it with distaste and called all of the other hairdressers to look at `that incredibly damaged hairī,mumbling all the time that people really shouldnīt let their hair grow that long....I felt quite silly with all of them standing there and telling me it had to be cut,so I gave in...and regretted it immediately afterwards. It took me seven years to grow it back to now  almost classic length,I went to a different salon for regular trims(always glad when I was out of there and still had my hair).About a year or so I stopped going to salons completely and I now trim it myself-itīs not as neatly cut as a professional could do it-but quite o.k.
Anne-Marie :)

How frightening!  It is for that very reason I have not been to a salon for trims.  My husband trims my hair once a year and I dust the splits myself as needed.

I do hope you are doing everything you can to care for your hair and ensure its healthy appearance.

Yes,sometimes Iīm surprised how healthy my hair is-very few splits-without going to a salon :DI grew up never questioning the existence :)of hairdressers, one simply went there every 4-6 weeks, and that was it.So when I decided never to go there again,I expected a lot of difficulties in caring for my hair-but I have to say itīs never been so easy-I simply dust the ends every 2 months or so and I manage to get them quite even.My hair has grown a lot during that time(almost classic),definately an advantage.

I was getting my nails done this morning and there is a new hair dresser at the salon I go to (it is a great all purpose place) and she couldn't imagine why anyne would want hair as long as mine (the girls there that know me had me take my braid out to show her).  I told her that I couldn't imagine having short hair....the girls there told her that this is why they are in business every one wants something different....she think that if I'm going to have long hair I should have it cut back to classic length....that is almost 10 inches of hair I asked her if she was nuts....I got a big laugh from the salon owner  he jokes about cutting my hair off all the time and he wants to dye it bright red too...that would be a sight!

Stress can do a lot of damage to your hair...my Mom lost some of her hair a couple of years ago to stress (part of one eyebrow too).  It has grown back now but it really made me think about my life style and I've slowed down a little to rest and relax it is a good thing to rest and relax and have fun and not take life so seriously.

Take it easy

Ginny;
It always amazes me when a hairdresser or stylist makes comments regarding hair being too long.  You would think they should appreciate the care and patience it takes to achieve the length.  Granted, they are in business to cut hair, but there are many ways they can still "make money" on a person with long hair - conditioner treatments, trims, etc.

Sounds like you are comfortable telling the stylists how you feel!  Way to go!

I have not been to a hair salon since my hair hit my shoulders, so I have no idea how they would react.  I am thinking about trying to find a salon in my area that would do a deep conditioning treatment on my hair.

Title: Re: How long is your hair?
Post by leia on Feb 14th, 2003 at 2:00pm
Have you been trimming your hair yourself?

For deep conditioning I usually put in conditioner and leave it in all night, wash it out in the morning. I have found that most of the salon deep conditioning doesn't do the job very well  :-/ you might have better luck.

Title: Re: How long is your hair?
Post by bikerbraid on Feb 14th, 2003 at 2:25pm
My husband had been trimming my hair every 6 months, but I have not had it trimmed for 10 months now. I have not been to a hair salon in many years.  But with waist length hair and the ends starting to get rather dry looking I thought I might try for a "real" conditioning treatment.

I do "dust" any split ends I find on a regular basis, but I don't have many of those  ;D

Title: Re: How long is your hair?

I heard that if you wear your hair up a lot, it increases your potential for having split ends, and if your hair is very long it weighs down your hair and creates tension... or something. There was a year when I would make a bun with a really cool clip *all the time* and that's when I got my first split ends, so I guess it could be true?

I've not heard that wearing the hair up in a bun causes splits, in fact I have heard and personnally experience the exact opposite.  When my hair is down, the ends, which are fragile due to their age, tend to break and spilt.  When worn up in a bun, they are protected (they are tucked into the bun and not exposed).  As for the tension, as your hair gets longer, you may find that you need to put the hair in a bun in 2 parts so that all of the weight is not stressing the same segments of hair.

patience ladies....when I was growing my hair out again it hit the middle of my back and stayed that length for about two years :-/...I didn't think it would ever grow again....it is now about 2" above my knees........

patience....time and patience ;)

when I want to do a deep condition on my hair I wet my hair down and work warm olive oil into it I tie it all up in a plastic bag and then wrap it in a towel...I stay that way for a few hours and then wash it out and condition.. my hair seems to like it so why tamper with the "salad treatment" :)

How long have you been using the olive oil as a treatment?  I found that it was drying to my hair and have heard others say the same thing.  I have very fine hair, so maybe it is the type of hair.

But you are so right, growing long beautiful hair takes a lot of patience.

Leia mentioned tension.  Has anyone else had neck  problems or headaches associated with the lenght/weight of your hair?

I have been having difficulties with both for quite some time now.  My hair is "bum" length and not too thick or thin.

I find i have to support my neck sometimes with my hand when rinsing out shampoo and conditioner.   :'( Several times lately, I have come close to cutting it off.   :o

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Title: Re: How long is your hair?

I've had times where my bun will pull on my hair.  I usually remake the bun and use just the top half of my head to make the bun and secure it , the coil the remaining hair around the first bun and secure it.  It usually is not noticable that I have made the bun with 2 separate groupings of hair.  Also, placing the bun in a different area of the haed, higher or lower can help.

How do you wash your hair?  In the sink, tub or shower?  Do you lean forward or backward to rinse?  Do you have problems with your hair tangling if you change the direction of your hair?

For years now and my hair seems to really like it...my scalp too.  My hair is fine in texture but it is thick.  I've never had a drying reaction to it.  Maybe it is because my grandma used this on my hair as a baby that it is something my hair and scalp are used to....

Robin,

I have problems no matter how I wear my hair.  I always wash in the shower because I don't like my hair going partially down the drain when using the sink.   :o

I rinse from the back, with my head tilted back.  I don't have tangling problems with respect to wahing, primarily because I like to let my hair dry mostly before combing it.  I have always been taught that your hair is most vunerable to damage from brushing/combing when it's wet.

I see what you're getting at, I'll try rinsing from the front and see if that helps...

Thanks

I agree on the hair down the drain  ;D!

Have you tried the split bun?  Does you neck hurt when you leave your hair down?  Could it be your pillow or how you sleep on your pillow?  (Don't laugh, the wrong pillow or the way you sleep on your pillow and cause serious neck pain).

Stress in general can also cause neck pain (along with headaches).  It is pretty unusual for hair to be the cause of head and/or neck pain.  The pain is usually from something else.

Hope you figure it out   :-/

Your body is built to support your hair growth until it reaches its maximum length. In the days of the cavemen, I don't think the women knew to cut their hair, and God would not have made us to have a certain amount of hair unless we could support it (if you don't believe in God, think of natural selection; we adapt to our environment, in this case, our hair  ;D). You hair is not and never will be too long for your head to support. I agree with Robin, it could be stress, as well as the way you might be sleeping, especially if you leave your hair open when you sleep.

If tension and/or stress is causing neck and back pain, I'd suggest some relaxation.  Try taking a hot shower with the water streaming on the areas that you have pain.  A soaking bath is also good.  A nice neck and shoulder massage can do wonders for you.  Try doing neck and shoulder rolls several times a day.  Pay attention to your posture and make sure you are not slouching or tensing your neck or shoulders.

I hope you can find some relief, we certainly would not want you to feel you need to cut your hair!  :P

This is what I do to get rid of stress: I meditate for a while on what is actually the cause of my stress, and then see what I can do to fix it. It isn't often that I am actually stressed, but when I am, it causes me to become anorexic which causes my hair to fall and me to become very sick so it's very important that I find out what's causing it! Sometimes the problem seems unsolvable. A few years ago, it was unpopularity, and I wasn't sure why, but I just basically ignored it and was myself and now I have no problem with that anymore. Once a boy was troubling me and I couldn't get rid of him for fear of hurting his feelings, but what I did was go up to him and tell him exactly how I felt about him and asked him to stop bugging me.

Bust that stress and save that hair  ;D

I'm 15 years old with bra length, kinda wavy-straight brown hair. My mom completely adores my hair because it's really thick and full of bounce and shine. She would never allow me to cut it! She told me that hair now will be gone tommorrow. I guess its true. I don't really like long hair as it isnt in trend right now but just for my mom, i'm keepin it for a while. Does anyone know any cool hairstyles for my kinda hair? Thanks!

How can you say it is not the trend right now???? Look at all the celebreties that pay tons of money for extensions!!!!  It sounds like you have beautiful hair.  In fact, hair that many others would love to have.

A fun hairstyle that would look good on a young person, is a knotted ponytail.  You pull your hair up for a high ponytail (you could put a hair friendly ponytailer on it to make it stay easier), then twist it like you were going to put it in a bun. Lay/twist the twisted/roped hair around once, then pull the remaining hair through the center of the bun from the bottom up.  Secure the knot with  pins or hairsticks.  This gives you a shortened ponytail!

I'm only 14 and I'm very proud of my long hair. I always keep up with the latest fashion and everything, but in my opinion long, beautiful hair is the one thing that is always in fashion. It always looks great and anyway, bra-length isn't all that long.

Another hairstyle that also looks great on young girls is a sausage-link-ponytail,where you tie your hair in a regular ponytail and then add a scrunchie every few inches all the way down 8)

My hair is just to the top of my waist.  How do you measure it ? I mean from what point to start? I have been growing it, consciously, for about 18 months. It was then about collar-bone length. The length my bangs are now. I had it trimmed about 9  months ago and that is when I decided to not wear bangs anymore. My hair grows pretty fast, so I am going to let it keep going until it won't grow any more. Actually this hinges on whether my son can help me braid it. He is willing to try so we will see. If not I may stop at the hips or just above that.  My hair is medium brown, with some reddish highlights, some grey(temple streak too, yippee!) and is wavy with a bit of frizziness at times.

When I measure mine I measure it from the crown, more or less where my part would end if I wore one.

From the crown?I measure from the beginning of the hairline(forehead)-maybe I have to revise my length :'(

Now it's about 30 inches when it's dry. It seems to really enjoy being around waist-lenght...  ;) But I'm doing what I can to convince it of growing to my tailbone.  :D I've been doing that seriously for maybe a year and a half and it has only gotten like 3 inches longer in that time, but at least it's in much better condition than before.  ::)
